Yancy Blackmon Obituary

Yancy "Ned" Blackmon N. CHARLESTON - Entered into eternal rest Yancy Ned Blackmon, husband of Ruth Sistare Blackmon, Thursday, August 27, 2009. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Y. Ned Blackmon are invited to attend the funeral service of the former in Wando Woods Baptist Church, Saturday, August 29, 2009 at two o'clock. Interment will follow in Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTH AREA CHAPEL, 2119 Dorchester Road, N. Charleston this Friday evening from five until seven o'clock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wando Woods Baptist Church, 4123 Dorsey Avenue, N. Charleston, SC 29405. Mr. Blackmon was born February 21, 1931 in Lancaster, NC, the last of six children of Jesse Brice Blackmon and Charlotte "Lottie" Blackmon. He graduated from Lancaster High School in 1949 and briefly attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte after serving in the US Navy. He opted for the Navy because he had a sharp fear of heights and did not want to fly. However, he tested high enough the math component of the evaluation exam that he was selected for the Navy Airdale and ended up flying exclusively. (He only stepped on a boat once his entire stint in the Navy and that was for overnight quarters.) After his tour of duty ended in 1951, he began his career in the trucking industry with Akers Motor Lines. Over the next 55 years, Ned earned and ultimately enjoyed icon status within the industry. As the longtime owner/proprietor of Blackmon Warehouse, Inc., he became widely known not only as a very knowledgeable and enterprising freight-handling expert but also as a very generous man who would go out of his way to help friends and competitors alike and even strangers who had found themselves in some sort of logistical dilemma or quandary. Very often, when folks had a freight related problem, the advice they received from multiple sources was to simply "call Ned". Ned's brothers, Bill, Paul, Tom and Jesse and his one sister, Mae Etta, all passed years ago. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth Sistare Balckmon. He is also survived by his two sons, Phillip and David, by his daughter, Sherry Brewer and by six grandchildren: Ashton Brewer along with Emily, Charlotte, Olivia, Michael and Lindsey Blackmon. Dear Aunt Ruth, Phillip, David and Sherry: Words cannot express our heavy hearts at this time and how much we care about you all and will miss Uncle Ned dearly. He touched so many hearts with his generosity. Our family is so blessed to have him as our uncle and my dad was blessed to have him as a brother. A trip to South Carolina was not a trip unless we all gathered and Uncle Ned told his stories and made us all laugh. Jake and Beckah will forever remember Uncle Ned driving down the street in his riding lawnmower as if it were his mode of transportation. We love you all and will forever remember our beloved Uncle Ned. Love Trina Mae, Dan, Jake, and Rebekah.

For my Uncle, his generosity and guidance helped me climb from humble country origins to see a larger world with exciting places and busy streets. He taught me more about life in a week of play than I've been able to get from a 50 people in 50 years.

I wish could have met with him just one more time, if only to say “Hi Uncle Ned”. It is unlikely that I would have said more, it was always enough. I loved and respected him, and his loss pains me greatly. But, I carry his laughter and joy in my heart forever, together with fond and warm memories of his generosity and open hearted friendship to everyone.

While I am one uncle shorter, God is one man better.

May he now walk the halls of the righteous and good with God Almighty.

Amen.

Ruth and family
It was our pleasure to get to know you and Ned. Ned was a fantastic man and his work on earth is done, but he will be waiting for us in a better place, probably looking for his glasses and cigarettes as we speak.

Dear Dave and Family,

We were all deeply saddened to hear the news about Ned's passing.
I just wanted to drop a line to share with you how much of a privilege
it was for me to have gotten the chance to meet and know Ned. He is
a unique man, a good man; and now that his race here on earth
has been run, I am sure he is resting comfortably in the house of our Lord.

The Broken Chain

We little knew that morning that God would call your name,
In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone,
For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Dear Ruthie and Family,

I was so sad to learn this news. Unfortunately, I am traveling and cannot get back to Charleston. I wish I could be there with you and the family. Please know that I will be remembering you and your family in my prayers. I loved Ned, he was one of the first people on the waterfront I met when I got into that business back in the 80's. He will be a great loss to all.

Ruth, I'am so sorry to hear about Neds passing. I always like Ned when he would come in the station and he and SL would always have some kind of bull going on. Ned was always in a hurry, his business was very important to him as it should have been. Don't know if you remember me I'am Kathy that use to work at Ashley Service Station. Once again very sorry to hear about Ned.
