Daddy,

I miss you so much. It's hard to put in words all that I am feeling right now. You were both father and mother to me. You were always my biggest fan telling me that nothing was impossible if I really believed in it. You taught me life's greatest lessons with gentleness and a touch of humor (I loved that you sent me xeroxed money when I was in college!) I could talk to you about anything and you never judged me--you just listened and allowed me to make my own decisions. You taught me life was not fair and you never sugar-coated anything. I loved your directness. All that I am today I credit to you.

We had a beautiful memorial service for you today and it is evident that you touched the lives of many people. Everyone there had wonderful, happy memories of you. I am truly blessed to be your daughter. Forever love, Alma

Dad:

I am going to miss you so much, but I know you are happy now being with Mom. You both have waited a long time to be together again and I'm sure you have a lot of catching up to do. I want to thank you for all the wonderful things you have taught me, especially to be independent and self sufficient. You always let us know that even though we are girls, we could do whatever we wanted to as long as we worked hard and applied ourselves. It was always interesting and sometimes challenging to talk to you about things as you would always give your opinion whether we wanted it or not. But you never told us what we should do; you stepped back and let us make our own path, and I thank you for that. You never raised your voice nor have I ever gotten mad at you about anything. You were a very compassionate man, especially of your family. You would make me laugh with all your wonderful stories and that Daddy dry sense of humor. I will really miss it! You were actually a kid at heart with all the whimiscal things you would make, which were so endearing. I guess that's where I get my crafty creativity. I will never forget our trip to Cypress Gardens. We had so much fun together that day. You will be truly missed by your family. Love ya, Your Julie Bug.

Uncle Buddy you were a loving man who will be missed by all of your family. I remember coming to Fredericksburg to your house and you always had a Charms lollipop in the cupboard for Leslie and I. The original ones not with the gum, they are still my favorite. My love for the ocean encouraged by trips on your boat in the bay. You also made our son Alex's first golf club. You always had creative ideas and were never at a loss for a good story. I will miss your big bear hugs! To Marti, Alma, Julia & Judy you are in my thoughts and prayers!

I have several "favorite" uncles and Uncle Buddy was one of them. I remember going to his house in Fredricksburg and playing with my cousin Marti Ann. Aunt Martha was such a sweet person and I enjoyed visiting with the family. Uncle Buddy would come home from work with his lunch pail and a smile. He was a moral person with strong values and a great deal of love for all of his children and other family members. He was kind and compassionate. Uncle Buddy would give you the shirt right off his back if he felt you needed it more than he did. I am proud to be his niece. He will be sorely missed.

A gentle giant once stood

with a fuzzy balding head,

a deep gruff voice,

mischievous grin,

big open arms,

and a heart of gold.

A gentle giant once stood

full of contrasts and complexity--

though reckless and wild and somewhat of a renegade,

he was also such a romantic.

He had strong convictions and a high sense of morality

and though childlike at times, he was very wise.

A gentle giant once stood

whose dry wit and humor

were the center of his being

and you couldn't help but laugh

with all his odd gadgets and many quirks

which made him so endearing.

A gentle giant once stood

who aimed square and straight

with a shotgun or his words;

a man of simple pleasures--

"The Captain" of Goof-n-Off.

A gentle giant once stood

who gave his all

in good times and bad--

a devoted son, brother, friend, husband, and uncle...

and beloved father and granddaddy.

A gentle giant once stood

who did the best he could.

Lovingly,

His daughter Marti
