Winifred Thomas Obituary

Winifred A. Thomas JAMES ISLAND - Winifred A. Thomas, 88, of James Island died February 14, 2010, at home surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Thomas was born on May 7, 1921 in Mount Vernon, Iowa to the late Bert and Essie Johnson Neal. She attended Iowa State College and Cornell College. She worked for the Iowa Manufacturing Company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa during WWII. She met Capt. William Thomas in Cedar Rapids while he was on leave from the war. They were married on September 21, 1946 in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Besides being a devoted, supportive wife for over 63 years and a mother of four she was recognized as a talented, creative writer by friends and family alike. Her poems, skits, and songs were performed on national and international air force bases, including Kansas, Texas, Washington D.C., California, Panama, Illinois, and South Carolina. As a loyal military wife who followed her husband around the world, she will always be remembered for her sense of humor, imagination and ability to make the best out of every situation. She is survived by her loving husband, Bill, who, for the past several years, has cared for her in their home at Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community on James Island. She is also survived by four children: Sandy DeRousse (Michael), Neal Thomas, Dr. Shelley Thomas, Kip Thomas (Martha); seven grandchildren: Brian, Lisa, Kelsey, Walker, Hayden, Woody, Gabby; and three great-grandchildren: Addison, Cameron, and Sasha. The family would like to especially thank Martha Goss and the staff of Hospice (Odessy) and Bishop Gadsden. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. William W. Thomas are invited to attend her memorial service Saturday morning, February 20, 2010, at ten-thirty, in Bishop Gadsden Chapel. I was so sorry to learn of your loss of Win. She was such a special friend of my mother, Chris Newton. It was so hard to hear how sad Mom was when she called to tell me about Win's passing. They had such a wonderful friendship. May the good memories of Win's unique sense of humor and all the good times you had, keep you strong during this difficult time. With warm regards. Colleen P. Col. Thomas, Kip, Martha, and family, I just learned of Win's death. I loved her so much and enjoyed for many years the oppotunity to sit beside her in the alto section of the HVPC choir. She had a wonderful sense of humor that kept everyone - especially Lon Shull the choir director- on their toes. We always looked to Win to write skits for choir parties and other church get-togethers. I love all of you. Sharon Smith
