Dear Goodwin Family,
We have all lost a "giant among men". What a kind hearted and generous gentleman Rev. Goodwin was. He had great concern for feeding the hungry. He never turned down food that would help nourish the poor. He was a "partner" in helping the Society of St. Andrew feed the hungry. You will be missed, my friend!

Your loved one has left a legacy behind, both here and abroad. He was a tall, lean, and studious man and whenever he entered the Ministerial Alliance meeting, everyone took note. He was very vocal in his belief in humanity and racial disparity. I loved being in his presence. God bless you all and hold on to what the Lord has given us, MEMORIES.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time of the passing of Rev. Willis. He was a great servant of God. He didn't even know me but he took the time to stop and listen to my problem, and steered me in the right direction. I am so deeply touched by his passing, but now we have another beautiful Angel in Heaven watching over us, the same as he did throughout his life. May God bless his soul and his family. He will be greatly missed, but his life was a life well lived for God. I am blessed to have had my life touched by him.

Our paths have crossed so many times at the Ministerial Alliance meetings and at meetings in the community where you worked hard at making a difference. December 13, 2007

My friend and colleague in the fight for social justice will certainly be missed in the struggle. He had such a colorful personality. As a non-traditional pastor, he did not have a problem taking his ministry to the streets locally and globally. His work to "feed the hungry and clothed the naked" did not fall on deaf ears. That call for service became his mission. He fed those that were hungry both spiritually and physically and for that those that are the least among us will surely miss him. Take flight my friend; I will miss you in the struggle.

Rev. Goodwin was our minister at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Sumter, South Carolina. As President of the Methodist Youth Fellowship(MYF)I looked up to him as a role model. He was my favorite pastor, as he spent time with the youth of Emmanuel and got us involved in community service. I remember him driving the church bus, working in the Soup kitchen and doing things that no other minister had ever done at Emmanuel. Rev. Goodwin was a true man of God who did not mind getting his hands dirty and working in all levels of God's House.

We, the family of Zion's Hill MB Church express our sincere condolences to the Goodwin family. Rev Goodwin was a great inspriation in giving us his support in helping us establish the Strawberry Assistance Center at Zion's Hill. He was truly a friend and one that would encourage you in any way he could. Without God & his aid we must say there simply would not have been a respite center in the Strawberry area. He saw a need and shared the vision of our pastor and went shoulder to shoulder with him to establish the center and in his honor we are extending our doors to all of those families who has relatives with Alzheimer and dementia-related problems to come to the center and let us provide social respite care to help meet the need of your families and caregivers. He will be miss and without a doubt, he has left a mark on our community and all of the lives that he touch. Zion's Hill loved this great man of God and he will forever be in our heart. We will keep your family in prayer.

To the Goodwin Family, Our hearts and prayers are with you during this time. Rev. Goodwin was very dear to us in our spiritual life. He was the pastor of Emmanuel when I became a member of Emmanuel. He performed the marriage ceremony at our youngest daughter's wedding. He was our pastor when Hurricane Hugo hit Sumter in 1989. And he was a beloved friend to our family. The Goodwin family left a legacy of Christian service in the establishment of the Goodwin Family Life Center and Soup Kitchen at Emmanuel UMC in Sumter. The Soup Kitchen continues to provide meals every day to scores of people, and the Family Life Center is the pulse of outreach ministries at Emmanuel. Mrs. Goodwin, please know that we love you and will keep you in our prayers. We have fond memories of your leadership and friendship during your tenure at at Emmanuel, and we remember fondly your coming from Charleston a couple of years ago to speak at our United Methodist Women's annual program. We continue to admire your personal strength and caring demeanor, even during challenging times. Truly, the Goodwin family has brought to others God's Kingdom on earth. You have helped many to understand their value and their worth in carrying out God's will. Rev. Goodwin served our generation well, and you have been a strong partner in that service. We love you and encourage you to continue to be strong, loving and faithful. Hope to see you soon. Mr/Mrs. James and Julia Wells

There are no words to express how I feel at this time; I shall surely miss my friend and Masonic brother, Rev. Dr. Willis T. Goodwin. Our prayers and thoughts are with you and your family in your hour of bereavement.
I will always have fond memories of Rev. Goodwin who always referred to me as "my organist". As I think about him, I can image him saying as he made the transition from this life, to life eternal, "And can it be that I should gain an interest in the savior's blood! Died he for me? who caused his pain! For me? who him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be that thou my God, shouldst die for me?
No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in him, is mine; alive in him, my living Head, and clothed in righteousness divine, bold I approach th'eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ my own. Then he said, "Tis done tis done, the great transaction's done! I am the Lord's and he is mine; he drew me and I followed on, charmed to confess the voice divine. Happy day, happy day, when Jesus washed my sins away! He taught me how to watch and pray, and live rejoicing everyday. Happy day, happy day, when Jesus washed my sins away!"
"When he shall come with trumpet sound, o may I then in him be found! Dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before his throne! On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand."
