William Whitworth Obituary

WHITWORTH, William WINNSBORO - Memorial service for William Bill Carroll Whitworth, 74, of Winnsboro, will be held 2 o'clock Tuesday, May 30, 2006, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel with The Rev. Dalton Ward officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the U. S. Marine Corps. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to University Parkway Church of God, P. O. Box 1236, Aiken, SC 29802. Mr. Whitworth died Saturday, May 27, 2006. Born in Richland County, he was the son of the late William C. and Elizabeth Harmon Whitworth. He served in the U. S. Marines during the Korean War, earning a Purple Heart. Upon returning from war, he became a S. C. Highway Patrolman and for a short time worked with the S. C. Wildlife Dept. He then went to work with the S. C. Tax Commission (ABC Board). In 1964 he was appointed Deputy U. S. Marshal. During this time he was in charge of special operations of Wounded Knee and ran the witness protection unit for the U. S. Marshal Service. While with the U. S. Marshal Service, he ran the SOG (Special Op Group) training is Brownsville, TX. Mr. Whitworth graduated from the FBI Academy in 1973. In 1981 he was appointed U. S. Marshal for the District of S. C, retiring in 1985. He was a former member of West Columbia Optimist Club. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Snipes Kemmerlin Whitworth of the home; sons, William C. Whitworth, Jr, his wife, Jan, and their children, Austin & Zachary of Roebuck, SC; Dennis David Whitworth, his wife Theresa and their children, Sean-David and Savan of Pacific Palisades, CA; step-children, Jackie L. Corley and Tonya Renay David, both of Lexington; 2 nephews, William E. and John D. Swygert; brother-in-law, Verne D. Hegge; 5 step grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
