William Weinstein Obituary

William Weinstein CHARLESTON - William Weinstein of Charleston died on Saturday, April 6, in Mt Pleasant, SC, after a long battle with vascular disease. He was 84. Bill was born on August 29, 1928, in Brooklyn, NY, to Julius Weinstein and Sara Weinstein (nee Rovner), immigrants from Kowel, Poland. After his mother's death, his father, who was disabled, put Bill in the Hebrew National Orphan Home in Yonkers, NY. As a student at Brooklyn College, Bill became a champion intercollegiate wrestler with an undefeated three-year record. During the Korean War, he served as an agent in the US Army Counter Intelligence Corps. In 1954, he began a 55-year career as a chartered life underwriter for the New York Life Insurance Company. While a resident of Ridgewood, NJ, Bill was a founder of Project Smile and Project Rose, organizations that provided services for disabled children. He also helped found civic organizations in Ridgewood responsible for the development of public tennis courts and the preservation of green spaces for public use. In 1981 Bill made Seabrook Island his second home, and became a fulltime Charleston area resident in 2001. Bill is survived by his wife Jennifer Walker Weinstein of Charleston; son Andrew of Brooklyn, and daughters Carrie of West Milford, NJ, and Liana of Queens, NY, all from a previous marriage with Diane DuBreuil Hiller; brother Albert Weinstein of Del Ray Beach, Fl, and sister Grace Sinden of Princeton, NJ; and grandchildren Ari and Maya. The grieving family thanks Betty Williams and Bill's other home health care providers for their loving attention.
