William Walker Obituary


WALKER, William William P. Bill Walker passed away on Saturday evening September 2, 2006 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. He was born on February 14, 1919 in Horseheads, New York and was the son of Florence Cary and William Joseph Walker. He resided at 708 Huger Drive, Georgetown, S. C. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Mabel Mary Isaac Walker. His son William P. Billy Walker, Jr. of Lexington, his wife, Amelia and their children Will and Bette Walker; son, Thomas Cary Walker of Mt. Pleasant and his wife Vicki and grandsons Thomas and Matthew Walker; son, James Cary Walker of Mt. Pleasant and his wife Dina and their children Mary Catherine, Cary, and Lawrence. Mr. Walker was predeceased by his son Robert Francis Walker and sisters, Virginia Snupik, June Reidy, Florence Compton, and Rita Walker. Mr. Walker is also survived by a brother John Joseph Jack Walker of Delray Beach, Florida, his wife Helen, and numerous nieces and nephews. During World War II, Mr. Walker was a member of the United States Marine Corps and served as a radio gunner in a torpedo bomber, a TBF-Avenger. He flew missions in the South Pacific from various airfields including Henderson Field at Guadalcanal. He also saw extensive action at other sites in the South Pacific including New Zealand and Rabal. He was also a member of a Special Marine Corps detachment at various small atolls in the South Pacific serving with natives and Australians as a behind the lines coast watcher for enemy troop and plane movement. He retired as a Technical Sergeant. After the war he served at the Georgetown Air Base where he met his future bride, Mabel Isaac. He was an avid golfer, a former member of the Winyah Bay Country Club and competed in numerous tournaments. He also enjoyed a lively game of billiards and the company of his veterans at VFW Post 6444 in Georgetown. He was also a former owner and operator of Palmetto Tire and Electric Company and was a retired salesman for Oxford Chemical Company. He was an avid reader, great writer and fabulous husband, father and grandfather. Services will be held at St. Mary Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church, 317 Broad Street, Georgetown at 2PM on Tuesday, September 5. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery with full military honors. Active pallbearers will be nephews, Joe Isaac, Danny Isaac, Glenn Turbeville and Chip Walker, and grandchildren, Will Walker and Thomas Walker. Honorary pallbearers will be member of the VFW Post 6444 in Georgetown. Memorials may be made to the William P. Walker Memorial Scholarship Fund, Newberry College, 2100 College St., Newberry, SC 29108 or St. Mary Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church, 317 Broad St., Georgetown, SC 29440.
