William Purcell Obituary

William Dwight Purcell Jr. (Bill), 84, of Charleston, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest on March 30, 2026.
He was born on December 13, 1941, at Baker Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of William Dwight Purcell Sr. and Nadine Steedly Purcell. Bill was a member of the first graduating class of First Baptist Church School and attended Berry College and the University of South Carolina on music scholarships. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance from the University of South Carolina.
Although he pursued other business avenues and successfully owned and operated a staffing agency for many years, it was always evident that music was his true passion. He shared this gift through private instruction, years of playing in his church, and performances in both public and private venues. He was a gifted accompanist for many soloists, including his son. Together, he and his son William performed around Charleston as "The Purcells."
His musical talents extended far beyond the piano. He was accomplished on the guitar, autoharp, ukulele, and harmonica, and his vocal abilities were enjoyed for many years in chorus and choir settings, often performing duets and four-part harmony. His repertoire was remarkably broad - moving effortlessly from classical and sacred music to pop, jazz, ragtime, and country.
He is survived by his daughter, English Anne Hurteau (Doug) of McClellanville, South Carolina; his son, William Dwight Purcell III (Heather) of Charleston, South Carolina; his loving sister, Carolyn Purcell Morrow (Duncan) of Springfield, Virginia; the mother of his children, Gloria Hoff Purcell; and his nephew, Kevin Morrow (Erica) of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Bill loved his Lord and, in his early years, attended First Baptist Church of Charleston. He later joined the Presbyterian Church in 1970, where he became an ordained elder and remained active in the choir and as a pianist throughout his life. He deeply loved his family and was blessed to grow up surrounded by 23 aunts and uncles and many cousins in South Carolina and Georgia.
We would also like to acknowledge the lovely staff at Ashley River Healthcare.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at St. John's Lutheran Church at 1:00 PM. Please join us for a reception in the Parish Hall immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the University of South Carolina School of Music Carolina Fund or the American Heart Association.

A truly kind person who greeted everyone with warmth and grace. Gifted in his own right, Mr. Purcell was a constant and devoted presence, always there to celebrate the many accomplishments of his talented and successful children. May he rest in peace.

Dear English and Family,
I am so sorry to realize your father passed away, so near a holiday especially. It always makes the holiday harder due to remembering their loss.
I hope the memories remind you of the good times with your father.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bill in the nursing facility where he spent his last years. I´m on the therapy team, and I loved to hear him play his ukelele. He found out I like to clog, and most every time I saw him in the hallway or in activities. he´d ask me to clog for him, and I would. I will always remember him and his light and zest for life. He brought joy to so many at Ashley River. He is definitely missed and we were lucky to have him for a little while.
