His Funeral Service will be held Sunday, August 19, 2018 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Interment will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Billy was born September 28, 1954 in Belleville, Illinois, the eldest son of the late Chalmers Marshall and Anna Mary Port. Billy was married to Nancy Chambers Port for 33 years and a lifelong member of John Wesley United Methodist Church. He graduated from St. Andrew's High School in 1973 where he was a standout athlete in baseball and football, scoring a touchdown every game of his senior year. Billy graduated from NCSU which he attended on an athletic scholarship for football and baseball. He was a catcher for the 1975 ACC Championship Baseball Team. Billy had a long finance career which ended with Ford Motor Credit, after 20 years of service. Billy remained an avid sports fan supporting his Wolfpack, the Falcons, and the Citadel Bulldogs, in honor of his father. He loved spending time with his family, walking his dog Chipper, and spending his weekends with his dear friends at 8th Street, Folly Beach. Billy is survived by his daughter, Anna Catherine Port Stokes and husband Shaun Stokes of Charleston; his son, Madison Thomas Port of Charleston; his brother, Kenric E. Port of Atlanta, GA; his sister, Sharon Forrester of Charleston; and his sister, Laurie Rogers of Fort Mill. Billy was a beloved uncle to many nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents. Billy leaves behind family and friends that will miss his infectious laugh and love of life. So sorry to hear about Billy's passing. He was a wonderful person to all who knew him and he supported his family as much as anyone I'd ever seen. Although an NCSU grad, Billy was a devoted fan of all of The Citade's sports team, especially baseball in support of his legendary father, Chal Port. He was always happy and his laugh was infectious. He treated me as family due to my involvement at The Citadel and knew I had a special relationship with his parents. I will miss him as will his terrific family and friends. My heart aches for him and all who loved him. May he Rest In Peace , and he can be reunited with his parents and wife.

I was saddened to hear that Billy Port passed. I played football with him in the fall of 1971 and 1972 as a center for the St. Andrews Rocks. Billy was one of the star athletes on the team. He was a talented running back, but more importantly he was a kind and happy person. It was a pleasure to know him.

I had the privilege of being a teammate of Billy's on a very special baseball team in 1972. One of the reasons it was special was because Billy was part of it. Two things I will always remember about Billy- his hearty laugh and his hard-nosed competitiveness. My condolences to his family.

Billy was quite simply " a really good guy." I was fortunate to have played baseball against him and with him. Having him as a teammate resulted in a much more enjoyable outcome than when he was an opponent. Billy was an extremely gifted athlete and fierce competitor. There was a time when I thought I had the unique ability to make Billy laugh. I quickly learned everyone had that same ability. I will always remember his hearty laugh and the grin that followed. The last time I saw Billy, very little had changed over the years. He was still the same happy and fun-loving guy I remember from out playing days together. I will miss my friend.

Having the privilege of growing up watching and learning from Billy has been a game changer. His compassion for the sports, knowledge of the situation and love of the competition has been inspiring, whether it was half-rubber, baseball, football,it was all in and best effort every time.
But what I Ioved about Billy was his wittiness, laced with humor and opinion, and the way he looked at life. So to my friend I raise toast for the happiness you have given each of us. You were a game changer in how you played and coached the game, and for that I am truly thankful!

If I had to pick someone to share a foxhole with during a war, I would pick Billy Port for two reasons. During battles he would fight as hard as anyone. The rest of the time he would keep me laughing. Friendship with Billy was like an old, reliable path that I could come back to, despite being separated from him by time and distance, and feel like we never left off. He would not let me take myself too seriously. He had this incredible knack for trivializing with wit and humor whatever adversity I was burdened with or challenge I was facing. He could switch between being serious and having a good time with ease. He could banter back and forth with anyone, and it was fun to watch, especially between him and Richard Wieters.

We had our share of good times, but playing football at St. Andrews High with Billy and Richard is one of the great privileges of my life. That experience has carried over and impacted my life and the lives of my wife, Beth, and our children. I am grateful to God for it.

Thank you, Bill, for making a difference in my life. You succeeded beyond belief. I will always be your friend and a fan.

God bless the Port family! May grace and peace be yours in abundance.
