William Phillipps Obituary

William Phillipps CHARLESTON - William Hall Phillipps, 76, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Claudia Anderson Phillipps, entered into eternal rest Thursday, June 22, 2023. His Funeral Service will be held Thursday, June 29, 2023 in St. Philip's Church, 142 Church Street at 11:00 am, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. Interment, Magnolia Cemetery, 70 Cunnington Ave, Charleston, SC 29405 at 2:00 pm. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel. Bill was born May 21, 1947 in Columbia, South Carolina, son of John William Phillipps and Valerie Hall Phillipps. He grew up in Walterboro, spending most of his time playing sports, hunting, fishing, and working at his father's stockyard. After graduating from The Citadel in 1969, Bill served in the US Army in Viet Nam, where he was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He came home and worked in banking at SCN then felt pulled to go to dental school at MUSC and began his career as a dentist in 1979. He retired from dentistry in 2019 after 40 years in private practice where his patients inevitably became more like family. Bill will be remembered for his quick wit, endless supply of jokes and stories, love of golf and shrimping, and incredible wood working skills, honed over the last few decades in his backyard workshop, lovingly dubbed The Cave. In addition to the many pieces of fine furniture he made, his incredible cutting boards are cherished by the people who are lucky enough to have one. He was a member of many clubs and organizations. Throughout his career, he volunteered his time as a dentist at two local outreach clinics, Our Lady of Mercy on Johns Island and the free dental clinic established by the Charleston Baptist Association in North Charleston. He also took part in several medical mission trips to Honduras with St Philip's Church. Along with his wife, Bill is survived by his three daughters; Katharine (Bryant) Bair, Morgan (Casey) Bearsch, Laura (Todd) Helmey; sister, Susan P. Humphreys and six grandchildren; Reeves Bair, Bennett Bair, Julia Bair, Lee Bearsch, William Bearsch, and Jack Bearsch. Memorials may be made to The Citadel Foundation, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409, St. Philip's Church, 142 Church Street, Charleston, SC 29401, or The Knox Martin Foundation for Brain Cancer Research, 700 Lindsey Baker Court, Gainesville, GA 30506. Bill was my Classmate at The Citadel and a great friend. I will never forget when he came home with me to McLean, Virginia over Winter Break. Bill had never seen snow before and was amazed by the 4 ft. high snow drifts during the Blizzard of 1966. He was a great guy and fine fellow. I was sad to learn of his passing. My condolences to his Family. Rest in Peace, Bill.

I miss Bill so much. He was more than my dentist.
He changed the way I felt about a dentist.
He is truly missed.
I knew his father from meeting him at the plantation with Poppa Huff.

Claudia and Family,
My deepest condolences to you and your family with Bill's passing. Bill and I were school classmates since the 4th grade. He always brought joy and laughter when we gathered for our WHS High School Reunions. He will be missed by all who knew him. May you find peace, comfort, and love as you walk through this journey of his transition to his heavenly home. And may his memories bring smiles.

So many memories, laughter, crazy times like the Christmas lunch at Yeamans. 30 years hold a lot of watching a good man and dentist make a difference in people's lives. Working with the Boss was the best time I can remember. Bill Phillipps was a man bigger than life. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. Our prayers are with the entire family. God bless.

One of the first people I met when I moved from NC to the Lowcountry. How refreshing to be welcomed by such a wonderful person. I saw him both professionally, and being my son's neighbor, had occasion to see him many times. My sincere condolences to his family. I am so sorry for your loss.

My deepest condolence to Katharine and all family members!
Dr. Phillipps was the first dentist that I saw when we moved to Charleston in 1997, and he had been the dentist of our family ever since, for over 20 years. His profound wisdom, endless stories and deep love for life will be missed by all of us! So long - Dear Dr. Phillipps!

Dear Claudia, Kak, Morgan & Laura, this one really, really stings. When I think of Bill, I start chuckling, think of his craft beer, the cutting board he patiently made and gifted to me for my wedding, Linville, my dad sharing the War Story he told at Linville one year, his devotion to his family, his dental practice, his friends, his church. I remember how much fun I had when he took me and Morgan shrimping from the CYC. With a twinkle in his eye, he said, "Sometimes, you drop the bait balls where you shouldn´t." That was Bill- so jovial, so kind, so wise.
I am sorry to miss the celebration of Bill´s life. I´m lifting all of you up in prayer.
Love & condolences,
Helen Barkley Ravenel
aka "Yellin´ Helen" (Claudia´s name for me that Bill adopted).

Bill was a wonderful gentlemen and the '69 Citadel Golf Dawgs were blessed to have him among our ranks at so many fun golf reunions! His humor and sneaky good golf game will be sorely missed. God rest his soul and prayers for his family.

To Claudia and the family-
I spent many an Army Reserve weekend with Bill in the 350th Dental Detachment, as a fellow Dentist and Soldier over a number of years. Bill kept us all entertained, and I had tremendous respect for his service in Vietnam. As the years went by, I would run into Bill at Dental meetings, weddings and sporting events, and it was if we had never missed a beat from our Reserve days. They don´t come any better than Bill Phillipps! My condolences and prayers that God may comfort your family with all the special memories you share.

Most sincerely,
