William Murphy Obituary

William (Dee) Murphy, Jr. Charleston - William (Dee) Martin Murphy, Jr., 79, of Charleston, died Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at St. Francis Hospital. The relatives and friends of Dr. and Mrs. William Martin Murphy are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 AM Thursday, September 20, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1695 Raoul Wallenberg Blvd., Charleston. The Rite of Committal will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery on James Island. The family will receive friends between 5:00 and 7:00 PM Wednesday at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home, 1620 Savannah Highway. Online Condolences may be offered at www.CharlestonFunerals.com. Born August 26, 1939 and raised in Charleston, SC by his father William Martin Murphy, Sr. and his mother Elizabeth Dozier Murphy. William graduated from Bishop England High School in 1957 and later graduated from the College of Charleston in 1961. He married his high school sweetheart, Christine Marie Michel, in August 1963. William received his medical degree from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1965. His specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynecology was from the National Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He served in the US Navy Medical Corps for nine years, achieving the rank of Commander. In 1973, after two years at the US Naval Hospital in North Charleston, he joined Dr. Carium Joseph in private practice where he delivered more than 3,000 babies in the Charleston area during his career of 35 years. Family was everything to Dee. Holidays, vacations, and simple family gatherings were where he was the happiest. He had an ability to find common ground and that special place with each of his children and grandchildren. Many of his endearing qualities live on in each of them. His love and care of family, patients, and people in general were evident through his caring and compassionate nature. William was a devoted member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church for 47 years. His unwavering faith served him well through his life's most challenging times and is an inspiration to us all. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernian and The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG). William is survived by his wife of 55 years, Christine Michel (Chrissie); his four children: Colleen Marie Murphy, Kathleen Michel Martin (Walt), William Martin Murphy, III (Tara), and Mary Elizabeth Flanders (Mark); and his six grandchildren: Collins Wooten (Daniel), Meghan Murphy (Zachary), Walt Martin, IV, William Murphy, IV, Catherine Flanders, and Emily Flanders. Memorials may be made either to Bishop England High School Endowment Fund (363 Seven Farms Drive, Daniel Island, SC 29492), or to St. Joseph's Catholic Church Building Fund. Arrangements by James A. McAlister, (843) 766-1365. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

Dr. Murphy was a hero to me in the US Navy. I was a Corps Wave, and worked with him during my time at Bethesda. I remember him with great kindness to all his patients. He had a great sense of humor with all his caring qualities. I admired his faithfulness to his church, family, and Navy. May God comfort his family in their time of transition and great loss. Sincerely, Peggy Cook

I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Murphy was a wonderful man. He delivered my son in 1975 and continued to be my Doctor until the day he retired. I had serious complications after my son was born and Dr. Murphy always mentioned that for years that we celebrated New Year's Eve in the St. Francis emergency room. I will always remember him on New Years Eve. May God bless your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I am just shocked. I was flipping through the obits' list to locate arrangements of a friend when the photo of Dr. Murphy popped up. I was a patient of Dr. Murphy from 1978 up to his retirement. I found him to be an excellent doctor with excellent bedside manners. He took time with me as a patient and kept me in good health, as well as, up on what medicines were working or what recent studies reported something that was beneficial to me. I played tennis and he would also be up on tennis talk as I played right across the street at the Charleston Tennis Facility. When he was about to retire, I asked him how was I suppose to carry on and he told me that Molly Joseph had joined the practice and that she was an excellent Doctor. Well lo and behold, my daughter and Molly played Junior tennis together. One other thing, I used to see Dr. Murphy and his wife in Costco and no matter where we were in the store, he would stop and talk. Dr. Murphy was a Giant of a Doctor. He will be missed. I am glad he passed my way.

I worked for Dr. Murphy for 21 years at OBGYN Associates. He was great to work for and was such a good doctor and kind to his patients and his office staff. I certainly enjoyed my time there working for he and Dr. Joseph. We had a great office and a lot of good times together and with the patients. During this time I also saw his children grow up and that made my time there even more interesting and fun. I will miss him he was a good man!!
