William Morris Obituary

William R. "Choppy" Morris, Jr. MT. PLEASANT - William R. "Choppy" Morris, Jr, 76, entered into eternal rest on Friday, September 1, 2023. His funeral service will be held Thursday, September 7. 2023 at All Saints Lutheran Church, 2107 N. Hwy 17, Mt. Pleasant, SC, at 11:00 am with a reception to follow. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mt. Pleasant Chapel. Choppy was born on April 4, 1947, in Charleston, SC, the son of the late William R. Morris, Sr. and Alice Climer Morris. Choppy was a 1965 graduate of Chicora High School where he was a highly decorated athlete in basketball, football, and baseball. He would attend the Citadel as a baseball and basketball player and graduate in 1969. He was a member of the 1967 Citadel basketball team that was relived through Pat Conroy's, My Losing Season. Choppy also played competitive golf, ping pong, pool, and even marbles as there was not a sport Choppy could not master. Many wonderful memories have been retold over the years involving Choppy Morris on a court or a field. Choppy would spend the next 20+ years in southern California developing his construction skills that would benefit so many of us in the years to come. Choppy married Susan Strauss in 1996 and has three stepchildren, Tiffany Moye (Tripp), Ty DuPree (Denise), and Terry DuPree (Angie). Choppy constantly reminded people his biggest accomplishment in life was having the opportunity to experience being a grandad. He was affectionately known to so many as "Boppy", especially to his ten grandchildren - Mary Elizabeth, Madeline, Matthew IV Moye; Cullen, Brock, Ashton, Chase, Stevie, Mary Alice, and Rosalie DuPree. Choppy was an ever-present fixture at all the kid's recitals, swim meets, birthday parties, basketball and soccer games. He will always be remembered as someone who gave so much to so many, especially to his family. Choppy's smile and presence will be so missed on the sidelines and in the bleachers. Choppy was preceded in death by his parents and best friend and brother-in-law, Carl H. Rourk, Sr. He is survived by sisters, Marion Rzepkowski (Ronnie) and Betty Jean Rourk; nephew and nieces, Carl Rourk, III (Katy); Debra Bruan (David), Ray Rzepkowski (Debbie), Cindy Rzepkowski, Cathey Massey (Jim), and Chelsea Rzepkowski. Choppy leaves behind many friends, especially his long-time friend, Buddy Beard. Memorials can be made in his honor to the Citadel Brigadier Foundation (69 Hagood Avenue, Charleston, SC 29403). A memorial message may be sent to the family on our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com.

Susan, I am so sorry for your loss. Seems so long since I have seen you. I never met your husband but he sounded like such a good husband, grandfather, and talented man. I hope you will find some peace and comfort soon. Thinking of you! Carol (Diamond)

I knew him when he was still Willie. It was in the 9th grade when Coach Ray Graves recognized his talents and christened him Choppy. The rest is history. He was good at every sport and made all A´s in high school. The coaches got him to come out for football his junior year and as small as he was, he excelled in that contact sport too. He scored 4 touchdowns in one game. His natural skills were honed by his work ethic. I recall after exhaustive summer football practice when I could barely make it to the shower, he would lift weights down in a corner of the gym. At the Citadel he excelled in baseball making all So Conference. Before he hurt his knee, the 5 ft 8 in Choppy started on the Citadel frosh basketball team against the nationally ranked Davidson frosh recruits. He scored 12 points and had many assists. However, most of all, he was a nice guy to all. Chicora´s hero.

Choppy, who was 6 months younger than I, was my best and FIRST friend growing up. He lived on the next street over from me. I can testify to his natural athletic skills and competitive spirit. He took my marbles, beat me in ping pong, took my money shooting pool and could out run me. A superb swimmer, Choppy made me look silly trying to duplicate his diving skills. Choppy excelled in every sport, with Baseball and Basketball were his being his forte. He scored 50 points one game (only to break his arm the next game. Choppy and I played on the same team in Small Fry (8 and 9), where we won the Championship, and Little League where we were both "All Stars". Oh , by the way, on the days we had Chicora High Basketball games, Choppy and I would sneak off and go to the pool hall. ( I really mean snake, because we were NOT allowed to go there by our Parents). Being a year ahead of Choppy meant we went out separate ways after I graduated from Chicora, but in life´s Tally, Choppy remained one of my "Best Friends", and I grieve his passing mightily.

My husband, Daughter and her family are saddened by the passing of Choppy.
Prayers that he died peacefully. Friendship that began several decades ago. He came into our life as "Mr. Fix it" . He was an expert in his field of construction. He loved helping others. Over the years we got to know him as a dear friend. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren. They lite up his life. An avid reader. He would sit down and share Citadel stories with my husband, books and politics and health challenges. Choppy, you will always bring us a smile when we think of you. Sincerely our loss, Dick & Betts Grant

Choppy and I go back to the playground days. My wife JoAnn went to school with him. I lost contact with him as we went to different High Schools. Hooked up with him at BE reunion in the 80´s. He had married a friend of mine. We have been in touch with each other ever since then. Just talked. With him on the phone about a week or so ago. We will miss him.
