William Lynch Obituary

William "Bill" Harold Lynch, M.D. SULLIVAN'S ISLAND - William Bill Harold Lynch, M.D., 61, passed away after a brief illness on September 17, 2024, in Washington, DC. Bill lived a life filled with caring for his patients, family, friends, and a passion for adventure. Bill was born in Durham, North Carolina, and raised in Delray Beach, Florida. Bill graduated from The McCallie School in Chattanooga, TN. He received his bachelors degree from Vanderbilt University, where he was a Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity member. When not studying for his pre-med courses, Bill played semi-professional soccer for the Nashville Blues. He received his M.D. from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at Georgetown University Hospital. He completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center/Parkland Hospital in Dallas, TX. In 2005, he established the Fort Sumter Surgical Clinic in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and practiced there until he retired in 2023. In addition to his medical career, Bill proudly served in the United States Navy for over 20 years, both on active duty, with tours on the USS Enterprise and USS John C. Stennis, and in the United States Navy Reserve. He retired as a Commander last year. Bill lived in the South Carolina Lowcountry for over 20 years and embraced the vibrant community and beauty, finding great happiness in fishing and sailing the offshore waters. His unwavering humor, heartwarming stories, and steadfast outlook on life inspired all who knew him. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Harold J. Jack Lynch, Jr., M.D. and Kathleen Nolan Lynch; and sister, Ann Marie Lynch. He is survived by his beloved Lynch siblings, Jane Lynch O'Donoghue (Tim), John P. Lynch, M.D. (Christy), Joan Lynch Lafranchise (Frank), Cathy Lynch Buckhorn, M.D. (Bob); and his uncle, Patrick S. Nolan, D.D.S. (Anita); and many dear cousins. Bill leaves behind his ten much-loved nieces and nephews, who cherished fishing, sailing, cooking, hunting, storytelling, and impromptu adventures with Uncle Billy. He leaves behind those he loved in Charleston, Pamela and Halston Jones and many dear friends in the CORA sailing community, especially the crew of the Celadon. To Bill's colleagues in the medical community, especially Eileen Heider and the staff at Bill's surgical practice, thank you for the love, support and care you gave to Bill and his patients over the years. The family would like to thank the medical staff at MedStar Washington Hospital Center for their outstanding care and expertise. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 1695 Raoul Wallenberg Blvd., Charleston, South Carolina, on Saturday, November 16th, at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the American Heart Association in Bill's honor.

Bill helped to keep me pointed in the right direction during my Navy Reserve time. His sense of humor made it a lot easier!

Bill was SO loved by the Huber family. The world lost a wonderful man. Bill never met a stranger and brought so much joy and knowledge to everyone around him. He helped my sister and me repair a huge patch of dry wall after a George Foreman grill accident. May everyone live and love life as much as Bill Lynch!

I have worked in Town Hall on SI for nearly 18 years. I remember him coming in every month to pay his water bill in person. He was always such a lovely person and had such a wonderful soul. My condolences to his family. He will be sincerely missed.

Since Bills Passing I reflect everyday about how life passes quickly. I only knew bill for a couple of years at McCallie but he was a brother. Unfortunately Hurricane Debbie came up the coast before we could have dinner and a drink to catch up. Our timing and schedules did not permit. I wish I was celebrating Bill's life today, however, I had a family matter to take care of.
A I reflect today, life is precious and think about how many lives Bill extended using his medical profession. Praying for you and your family.

One of my favorite memories was Bill dropping the spinnaker pole on me (I wore a helmet thereafter) causing some swelling in an ear. Later I visited his office and he drained it. He said, "I broke it ... I'll fix it"!!

Praying for you and your family. I am sorry for your loss. Bill was a fun classmate at McCallie. We would Catch up when I was passing by Charleston. We were to connect on the trip North to the Chesapeake and Our Schedules did not work out to meet. Hurricane Debbie was on his heels. Life is precious and everyday is not promised but the little things make for lasting friendships and memories.
