Earlier today LTC(Ret) Bob Burke informed me of the death of Bill Hudson in November. My condolences to the family
In the 1970s I worked for Colonel Hudson in the XVIIIth Airborne Corps Headquarters at Fort Bragg. I remember accompanying Colonel Hudson to private meetings in the Corps Commander's office and occasionally subbing for him in briefing command and staff meetings. He was a gentleman and an intelligent officer with a wide variety of military experience in peace and in combat. With retirement on the horizon, Bill talked me about my recent purchase of a condo at the beach in Florida, but he ended up retiring to South Carolina.
My recollection is that he deployed to Vietnam with the "Big Red One" out of Fort Riley and that he served as a Defense Attaché in Belgium before his return to Fort Bragg. I recall that, while Bill was stationed in Belgium, Betty angered a Paris hotel because she had called them speaking in French to make reservations for a weekend in Paris. It seems that at the time Paris Hotels would jack up the prices on Americans; but because Betty made the reservation speaking French, they got a better deal, much to the displeasure of the hotel.
The last time I spoke to Bill was about a dozen years ago when I ran into him in Charlottesville. I was at a restaurant when I saw his sons and with them were Bill and Betty. I re-introduced myself, as I had not seen Colonel Hudson in 20 years. We talked for a few minutes until I returned to my dinner companions.
Burial, with full military honors, at Arlington National Cemetery, is a fitting recognition for a dedicated soldier and patriot of two wars.
