William Hatchett Obituary

William Harvey Hatchett Summerville - A much-loved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, William Harvey Hatchett ("Harvey"), 87, of Summerville South Carolina, died peacefully at his home on August 23, 2021. Harvey was born March 31, 1934, in Fort Lawn, South Carolina, to Rev. Oliver H. and Myrtle (Harvey) Hatchett, and he graduated from Providence High School in 1952. He excelled at sports, including golf, baseball, basketball, and football. Harvey served in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1957, where he was assigned to the U.S.S. Henderson (DD-785). After leaving the Navy, Harvey graduated from the University of South Carolina in Columbia in 1961 with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Harvey's career included several civilian positions with the U.S. government. During his tenure with Naval Intelligence Service, he and his family lived in London England from 1970 until 1973. Harvey also worked for the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Customs, living in several cities throughout the southeastern United States. In 1988, Harvey retired from U.S. Customs as a Special Agent. In retirement he held several part-time jobs, the most memorable of which include serving as a Berkeley County Magistrate from 1990-1994 and a golf course Starter at The Club at Pine Forest until a few months before his death. Harvey was an avid sports fan, and his favorite sports to watch were Gamecock football and whatever his kids and grandkids were playing. He was a supporter of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, from which both his sons graduated. Harvey was an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Summerville. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, Mary Beth Hatchett, TJ Hatchett, and Quentin Hatchett. Harvey loved English Bulldogs, and over the years he and his wife welcomed five different Bulldogs into their family. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Effie (Robertson) Hatchett, his sons, Dr. William Hal Hatchett (Kim) and Eric Hatchett (Jen), as well as his three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Rev. Marion J. Hatchett. A Celebration of Life will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church on Saturday, September 4, 2021, at 2 o'clock.
