William Guerry Obituary

William LeGrand Guerry, Sr. Mt. Pleasant - William LeGrand Guerry, Sr., 92, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, widower of Courtonne "Coty" Marshall Guerry, entered eternal rest on Friday, December 30, 2022. He is survived by his children, William LeGrand "Gill" Guerry, Jr. (Patricia), Lisa Guerry McCaskill (Travis), Keith Marshall Guerry, Caroline "Carol" Guerry Pierce, Joseph Haskell "Jody" Guerry (Catherine) and Charles Buck Guerry; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Anne Guerry Woods, sister-in-law, Cile Hutchison Guerry; and countless nieces, nephews, and close friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Coty Marshall Guerry, his brothers, John Everett Guerry, Jr., and Jon Leroy Guerry, his sister, Jan Guerry Moore, and his son, Robert Todd Guerry. Born in Bonneau in 1930 to John Everett Guerry, Sr. and Frances Cole Guerry, he spent his younger years in Mount Pleasant. In his late teens and early twenties, he served in the Army Military Police during the post WWII occupation of Trieste, Italy. During the Korean conflict, he served as an MP at Fort Jackson. Mr. Guerry began his career in finance with First Federal in the 1950s. He continued his career in real estate and development as founder of Guerry Realty in the 1960s. He also served as a constable for Charleston County in the 1960s and Magistrate for the Town of Mount Pleasant in the 1970s. His career as a real estate appraiser also began in the 1960s and in the 1980s he founded Appraisal Associates of Charleston bringing a second generation into the appraisal profession. That firm was succeeded by The Guerry Group that continues today with a third generation following in his footsteps. Mr. Guerry was active in community service as one of the founding members of the Mount Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department and East Cooper Outboard Motor Club "ECOMC". In addition, he was a charter member of Mount Pleasant Cotillion, served as commodore of Mount Pleasant Yacht Club, as a charter member and co-chairman of the original land-use committee, and later as a member of Charleston County Assessment Appeals Board. As an active member of Saint Andrews Anglican Church from childhood, he served on the vestry and numerous committees, Kairos and Cursillo teams and rector of Cursillo #74. In addition, he and his wife Coty made many mission trips including La Gonave, Haiti and Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina. He also served as a volunteer chaplain to the Charleston Seafarers Society and was a former member of the board of visitors of Kanuga Conference Center. A memorial service will be held at Saint Andrews Church, Mount Pleasant, SC on Friday, Jan. 13th, at 11 am. The service will be followed by a Columbarium interment on the St. Andrews campus, and a reception in Sam's Hall. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mt. Pleasant Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Domestic Missions, St. Andrews Anglican Church, 440 Whilden Street, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464. As a first cousin with LeGrand, I always enjoyed seeing him and Coty at Guerry family reunions. I appreciated hearing about their travels--especially their trip to France to visit our "distant" Guerry relatives. I live in North Alabama and learned today from my sister, Kay Dunston that LeGrand had died. My sympathy goes out to all of the family, perhaps especially to Ruth Ann Guerry Woods in the loss of her brother, LeGrand.
Deep peace to all,
Judy Guerry, daughter of Jettie Guerry, LeGrand's uncle

I was so sad to hear that LeGrand had passed. My father, Jack Guerry, always thought so much of him and Coty. I remember seeing them at the Guerry family reunions. They were both so sweet and entertaining. Lifting prayers for all of the family! With love, Lynn Guerry Sherrill

Dear Lisa, Travis, Jody, Catherine, Gill, Keith, and Buck,
I am so sorry for your loss. I loved your father so much. He was such a gentleman and always made me feel so welcome when I dropped by to see Coty. I am so thankful they are together again and that he is out of pain and enjoying the blessings and rewards stored up for him in heaven. I am so disappointed that the funeral is going to be on Friday as I am going to be in Burnsville closing on a little mountain house I am buying there. I am so sorry not to be able to attend but know I am with you in spirit I remember at your mother's funeral looking up and seeing her smiling with no glasses on! Lisa, please contact me when you are able to.
I would love to see you.
With much love and many prayers for God to comfort you and give you His peace,
Patti
