William Gaynor Obituary

William B. Gaynor, MD CHARLESTON - William B. Gaynor, MD, 89, of Charleston, SC, passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, formerly a resident of Lancaster County, PA. He was born on December 1, 1924, in Pittsburgh, PA, son of the late Helen Gray Gaynor and the late Richard Gaynor. Bill was a well-respected clinical pathologist at Ephrata Community Hospital in PA for many years, remembered fondly by his associates and employees. He was an avid amateur photographer and traveler. He was an alternate delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1968 in Chicago and was involved with the local Democratic Party. He met his wife of 56 years, Jane Wade Gaynor, while residing at the Masonic Home in Elizabethtown, PA, after losing his father. Bill and Jane married after he served in France, Belgium & Germany during WWII in the 78th Lightning Division, including the Battle of the Bulge. He often mentioned that if it wasn't for the GI Bill, he wouldn't have had the opportunity to complete college and attend medical school. He graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA, and then graduated from Temple University Medical School in Philadelphia, PA. His family will remember him as a supportive, loving husband and father. Bill is survived by one daughter: Elizabeth Gaynor Paul and her husband, John Paul, of Whitehouse Station, NJ; two sons: Jonathan Gaynor of Charleston, SC and William Gaynor, Jr. of Philadelphia, PA; two granddaughters: Amanda E. Paul and her husband, Anthony Mazza, of New York, NY and Alice J. Gaynor of Charleston, SC; and one sister: Juanita "Sue" Zadora of FL. Besides his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Wade Gaynor; his daughter, Judith Wade Gaynor; and two younger brothers. A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
