William Garrett Obituary



GARRETT, SR., William MOUNTVILLE - William Ripley Dub Garrett, Sr., 85, of 2647 Highway 39, widower of Marion Cooper Garrett, passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at Laurens County Hospital. Born in Laurens County, he was the son of the late Furman Shaw and Agnes Pitts Garrett. He served in the US Army during WWII in North Africa and Italy. His military awards included five Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, one Silver Star, Combat Infantry Badge, and in 2005 he was the first to be inducted into the Hall of Heroes of Laurens County. He was a life long farmer and had received awards for 1983 Agriculturist of the year and 1988 Farm Family of the year. He was also the Past President of the Farm Bureau from 1979 to 1987 and was currently serving on the Board. He was a former Chairman of the Laurens County Republican Party from 1966 to 1972. Mr. Garrett was also a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church. Surviving are four children, Barbara Hiott and husband, Sam of Ravenel, Linda Jones and husband, Rex of Greenville, William R. Garrett, Jr. and wife, Dot of Mountville; and Allen Garrett and fiancée, Jane Rainwater of Laurens; grandchildren, Christy and (Troy) White, Robbi and (Trey) Statham, Keri and (Alex) Forrest, Kathryn and (Jim) Ferguson, Patrick Garrett, Nelson Garrett, Holly and (Philip) Robertson, Jenna and (David) Madden, and Brandon and (Anna) Garrett; and eight great grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by a sister, Lillian Pressley and two brothers, Furman Garrett, Jr. and Samuel Marion Garrett. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Friday, February 15, 2008 at Beaverdam Baptist Church, 1555 Beaverdam Church Road, Mountville, conducted by Rev. Phil Bryson with entombment at Forest Lawn Mausoleum with Military Honors. The family will be at their respective homes and will receive friends Friday from 12:30 to 2:00 pm at church before the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to, W.R. To Billy and the rest of the Garrett family. Sue and I are in Summerville and saw the notice in the Charleston Paper. Please accept our condolences on your father's death. He was a great soldier and citizen and will be greatly missed in our community.
