William Evans Obituary

William Evans, Jr. CHARLESTON - William J. "John" Evans, 80, passed away on October 21, 2025, in his birthplace of Charleston, South Carolina. John was admired by all who knew him, respected him as a mentor, cherished as a husband, son, and brother; and remembered for his generosity, sharp wit, and gift for storytelling. He earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of North Carolina, where he remained a devoted Tar Heels football and basketball fan throughout his life. He met his beloved wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Cromartie Evans, while she was a graduate student at Duke University. Betty tragically passed away from ALS at age 36. John spent many years in Apex, North Carolina, where he was active in community affairs, served on local boards, and was a Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary International. He also supported the Ronald McDonald House Charities. In 2023, he returned to Charleston and became a resident of the Bishop Gadsden Episcopal Retirement Community, where he thrived among new friends and family. He is survived by his brother, Thomas M. Evans, and sister-in-law, Theresa, of Charleston, along with many beloved nieces and nephews. A private family celebration of John's life will be held later this fall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bishop Gadsden Employee Appreciation Fund, Ronald McDonald House Charities, or a charity of your choice.
