William Culp Obituary

Dr. William Culp, Jr. Rock Hill, SC - Dr. William Leonard Culp, Jr., 62, passed away on Monday, May 14, 2018 at Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House. Funeral Service for Dr. Bill Culp will be Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 11:00 am at First ARP Church, 201 East White Street, Rock Hill, SC 29730, with Reverend Phillip Bunch officiating. Burial will be 10:00 am prior to the service at Forest Hills Cemetery, Rock Hill. Visitation will be Friday, May 18, 2018 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill. Bill Culp, the son of the late William Leonard Culp, Sr. and Dorothy Sims Culp, was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina on May 25, 1955. Bill grew up on the Winthrop College campus to parents who encouraged his creativity in a loving home. He attended Macfeat Childhood Laboratory School and Winthrop Training School until its closure. Bill was a member of the first graduating class of Northwestern High School. In 1977, he received a degree in zoology from Clemson University and was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi national honor society. Four years later, Bill graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina College of Dental Medicine in Charleston, South Carolina where he met, Janice, the love of his life. During his 36 years of practicing dentistry in Rock Hill, he earned the Mastership Distinction from the Academy of General Dentistry, was a South Carolina Chapter Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy International Honor Dental Organization, American Dental Association, South Carolina Dental Society, Central District Dental Association (past president), and Tri-County Dental Society. It was a great day when his twin sons graduated from MUSC in 2011 with the same degree that he earned, exactly thirty years prior, and then joined him in his private dental practice. Bill was a kind and gentle man who loved his family. He was his family's biggest cheerleader. He looked forward to Friday night dinners with his wife and sons at favorite restaurants in Charlotte and Charleston. He was quick with a smile and a laugh. He loved Clemson home football games, movies, dinner, and weekend trips with family and dear friends. Bill loved music and earned a chair at the Cannon Music Camp in Boone, NC where he played the clarinet. He learned to play the cello when his sons were taking violin lessons and played with them in concerts. He loved to dance to beach music especially "Summertime is Calling Me." Attending dances where the "Ninth Row" band was playing was a favorite during his dental school days. He loved dancing at friends' weddings. He made lifelong friends in his years working at Home Supply installing television antennas. During the summer before his senior year in high school, he and a friend traveled Europe for five weeks with only a roundtrip air ticket, a Euro Rail pass, one change of clothes, and a tour book titled "Europe on Five Dollars a Day"! Bill was a member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church for 62 years where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He recently joined First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Rotary International since 1986. In 2006, he was initiated into the Clemson University Chapter of Kappa Alpha Order while his sons attended Clemson University. He served on the Clemson University Parents Development Board, the MUSC Board of Visitors, and the Winthrop University Dacus Library Board. Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Janice Ann Salerni Culp; twin sons, Dr. Charles William Culp and Dr. Alexander Joseph Culp; and his sister, Dorothy Culp Farmer and her husband Art. We thank his work family, the Culp Dental Staff, with a combined 137 years of employment, for their love and support especially during his illness. We thank his dental patients for the confidence and trust they placed in him and their friendships. We are grateful for the love and support from, our ministers and church families, the Close Family, The Springs Company, MUSC particularly the Department of Orthodontics faculty, staff, and residents, the dental community, and the outpouring of kindness from our families and dear friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made Bill's name to First ARP Church, 201 East White Street, Rock Hill, SC 29730, Clemson University, Chapel Fund, 110 Daniel Drive, Clemson, SC 29631, or the Medical University of South Carolina, College of Dental Medicine, 173 Ashley Avenue, Charleston, SC 29425. I worked with Bill at Home Supply Co. during our high school days. Bill had such a great sense of humor. We always found something to laugh about as we rambled around town in the work trucks. My career has taken me away from Rock Hill, but I will always remember Bill as a great friend. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Until we meet again...............

Bill and I were friends at Clemson. We were both zoology majors and spent many hours studying together. He was a good friend and challenged me to study just a little harder as we often competed for the best grade. We pulled many all nighter study sessions together but I was usually the one that left first because I would be sleeping on top of my text book. I have thought of Bill many, many times over the years and intended to call him and thank him for challenging me to be better. I was stunned when I saw the obituary and greatly saddened I had never called and thanked him for being such a good study buddy while at Clemson. I am encouraged to know Bill had a wonderful family and such a dedicated life to his profession and especially to God. I am happy to know that someday Ill see him again and we can both know together we achieved the ultimate goal of knowing God and living for Him. My prayers are with the family and to encourage them to remember the good times they had with Bill.

Bill Culp was my great friend from high school and our days at Home Supply Co. Bill could do anything, whether putting up a TV antenna, or making Phi Beta Kappa at Clemson and becoming a wonderful dentist. Everyone in my family looked forward to dental visits with Dr. Bill, and I looked forward to catching up on old times, when we would double date. I'll miss this wonderful friend for now, and look forward to seeing him and his mom and dad in Heaven. Our prayers go out to Janice, Charlie and Alex.

Culp Family

Dr. Culp has been my dentist for years. He had a wonderful personality and was a caring dentist. He will be missed.

I read the following recently, perhaps it will bring you comfort (author unknown).

The nicest place to be is in someone's thoughts. The safest place to be is someone's prayers, and the very best place to be is in the hands of GOD!

May happy memories carry you through this time.

I am extremely saddened by the news of Dr. Culp's passing. I have been a patient of his for over thirty years, and he has always been amazing. The atmosphere in his office is unlike that of any other dentist I have seen. The tone is always friendly, upbeat, professional but homey. I am sure that is not by accident but is an extension of his personality.
I have never met a man with more character and integrity. When my mother who was eighty-something began having teeth break off at the gum line, she wanted new teeth in the front, and I wanted her to have them. Dr. Culp made molds, but he kept stalling and never let us reschedule a time for her to come back in. I now realize that he recognized that her dementia was worse than I did and knew that there was no point in spending all that money on her mouth or putting her through that extensive procedure in her state. I have always completely trusted Dr. Culp's position on what my family and I should have done, and I feel fortunate now to go to Dr. Charlie whom I also trust comletely.
Finally, Dr. Culp was a doctor who went the extra mile. Once, when my mother had a dental procedure done, I was a little worried since I had to go out of town for the weekend. Dr. Culp, however, alleviated my concern by going to Westminster Towers to check on her himself. She was thrilled! Also, once one of my granddaughters had ulcers in her mouth on a Sunday, and my daughter was afraid she had Hand, Foor, and Mouth Disease. She called Dr. Culp who met them at the office on Sunday afternoon at no charge.
I am sure Dr. Culp touched innumerable lives in similar ways. My deepest condolences to Janice, Alex, and Charlie. Rock Hill will miss him, too.

Bill's spirit of fun and adventure were infectious! When he began his practice, we took our two young sons to him. The younger son was barely three & that was his first visit to a dentist.

After having a "water fight" with them, blowing air into their hair, etc while explaining what all those strange gadgets were for, neither boy feared Dr. Culp or his tools. The younger son would beg to sit on my lap so he could watch Dr. Culp work on my teeth. Ever patient, Dr. Culp would let Griff, thinking perhaps he would want to pursue dentistry. Griff did not but learned so much about a fascinating subject and the character of a man to emulate.

I am shocked!!! Dr. Culp was the best dentist in the world. He was always loving and kind, patient and understanding and truly cared about his patients. I am heart broken to hear this as I have always felt there was no one else like him . He always had a kind word and a smile... he loved his boys and wife and spoke of them often and how they were doing. Truly a great loss to the community to all of us who knew him... My heart goes out to the family during this difficult time. Prayers for each of you....

I am so sorry for your loss. Bill was a great friend of mine at Clemson. He was a pleasure to be around, he was kind, and he worked harder than anyone I knew! It was my good fortune that our paths crossed at Clemson. We lost touch after college, but I will always remember Bill, and the memories of Bill from Clemson were all good. He will be missed.
God be with you at this difficult time.
