William Cooper Obituary

COOPER, JR., W. Robert LANE, SC - William Robert Cooper, Jr., 79, died Monday, April 24, 2006, at his home after a lengthy illness. Mr. Cooper was born September 24, 1926, in Salters Depot, a son of the late William Robert Cooper, Sr., and Dulcie Lifrage Cooper. He retired after 41 years of service as Postmaster of Lane. Prior to this, he operated a grocery store and Cooper Electrical Appliances and Evinrude Outboard Motors. Mr. Cooper served as Mayor of Lane and also served as the Chief of the Lane Volunteer Fire Department. He was an active member of Lane United Methodist Church. During WWII, Mr. Cooper served in the Merchant Marines and afterward in the US Army with the Occupation Forces in Osaka, Japan. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Harry Stullenbarger and Rev. Ken Timmerman, will be 11 a.m., Thursday, at Lane United Methodist Church with burial to follow in Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 at Williamsburg Funeral Home. Surviving Mr. Cooper are: his devoted wife of 54 years, Mildred Cantey Cooper; his children, William Robert (Sukhui) Cooper, III of Florence, Gwendolyn Cooper (Mike) Harmon of Gilbert, Sara Dee Cooper (Ken) Timmerman of Myrtle Beach, and John Russell (Novia) Cooper of Kingstree; grandchildren, Bryan Cooper, Sim Harmon, Russ Cooper, William Cooper, and Cooper Timmerman; sister, Mary Cooper Geddings of Lane and sister-in-law, Adalyn Burrows Cooper of Kingstree; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Cooper was preceded in death by his brother, George Edwin Cooper. The family wishes to thank Sharon Player and the Tidelands Community Hospice team consisting of: Angie Rogers, Mary Chinnes, Laurie McAlpine and Velma Spates for their love and support.
