William Carraway Obituary

CARRAWAY, William KINGSTREE - William Brearley Carraway, 90, died Saturday, June 17, 2006, at the home of his daughter in Columbia. Mr. Carraway was born November 1, 1915, in Eutawville, a son of the late George W. Charles Carraway and Mable Elizabeth Burgess Carraway. He was raised at Thornwell Orphanage from ages 6 to 18 after his father died. Mr. Carraway lived in Kingstree for most of his adult life, but has lived the past nine years with his daughter and son-in-law in Columbia. In 1939, he began working for the local newspaper, THE COUNTY RECORD, owned by Lewis Cromer. After Mr. Cromer's death, he continued working for Mrs. Cromer until 1979 when Banner Publishers bought the newspaper. For five years he and Vaughn Alsbrook ran the newspaper for this owner until THE KINGSTREE NEWS bought it in 1984. He worked for the Kingstree News as advertising manager for two years before he retired. He loved his work and he and his family and many fond memories of his years with the newspaper-especially before everything became computerized and the office smelled wonderfully of ink and newsprint! In addition to his newspaper work, he served 16 years as the Williamsburg County Deputy Coroner and later 12 years as Bailiff in the Williamsburg County Court. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Beatrice Scott Carraway in 1997 and three brothers: Charles, Burgess and Harris Carraway. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law Anne and Parker Martin of Columbia, son: LeGrand Carraway of Kingstree, grandsons: Rich (Michele) Arnold and Michael Arnold all of Atlanta, granddaughter: Elizabeth Martin of Charleston, great-grandchildren: Will and Claire Arnold of Atlanta; sisters-in-law, Isabell Carraway of Summerville, Ada Carraway of Manning, Janet McCrea, Virginia Tedder Gracie Chandler all of Kingstree and Doris Tisdale of St. Stephen, and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the special care given by Dr. Ruben Mayer, Priscilla Kershaw, Charlotte Grissett and Palmetto Health Hospice. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, in the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, with burial in Kingstree Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, at Williamsburg Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Williamsburg Presbyterian Church Organ Fund, 411 N. Academy St., Kingstree, SC 29556. Dear Anne,

I have thought of you so often and when I would come to visit my parents in Kingstree, I always wondered if you still lived there. I've lost both of my parents and I know how you feel at this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I was at a class reunion May 26, 2006, Class of 56 in Kingstree and other classes included and I wondered if you would be there. We were in band together. I still have a letter you wrote me many years ago.

I thought so much of your folks and admired them greatly. Every time I think of the Kingstree paper, I think of your dad and the County Record.

Would love to hear from you sometime. My prayers are with you and your family at this time.

Love, Janie Gregory Polutta

To: Anne and LeGrand We returned to Kingstree 4 years ago after living in the Charleston area for over 50 years, but we pleasantly remember your parents and you, as children , when we frequently visited with Mrs. Swittenberg across the street from your home. God bless you in this time of loss. Ellen and Johnny Evans

Dear Anne and Family,

I was so sorry to see Bill's death in the paper. I didn't even know that you lived in Columbia. I know many people have good memories of him and your Mother.

I wonder if you remember having your tonsils removed at Kelly Memorial Hospital in Kingstree. We

were in beds out on the porch on 2nd floor. I was sicker than you.

I bled a lot and Dr. Brice got scared and missed taking out all of mine. I think I was the 1st and last tonsillectomy he did.

I was formerly Ann Lawson; was married to Frank Chestnut for 21 yrs. and we had one son, Don. I have been married to Marion Joye for 14 yrs.(7-4-92).

I really miss all of my friends from Kingstree. A lot of members of my family have been lost to cancer. My only sibling, June L. Brown (David), still lives at the farm at Cedar Swamp. She's 71 (6-25-06), and has a lot of medical problems.

My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family every day.

Would love to hear from you.

Sincerely,

Ann L. Joye
