Today is December 6, 2020. I just learned of my shipmate and mentor’s passing. I was so sad to read of it. Like Chief Bill, I was a USCG Chief Quartermaster, and finished 11 years of active duty determined to fly for an airline. Staying in the reserve, I made master chief QM the year before I became a 737 Captain with Continental Airlines.
Both my wife Jette and I remember Bill and Patricia from when he was serving as XO of USCGC CAPE YORK, in Key West. I had served with Bill aboard Vigilant in New Bedford previously, but was delighted to get acquainted again after two years in Alaska. Fair winds and following seas, Bill. Fondly Remembered.

Billy,
I really enjoyed working with you and getting to know you at Piggly Wiggly, even though there was over 30 years difference in our age, you are one of the best friends I've ever had. You changed my life. Thank-you.

To the Benton Family,
We are sorry to hear of Billy's passing. Ed recalls Billy and other Island boys coming to the SI Coast Guard station, playing football and eating ice cream with the crew. Also, while visiting the Charleston Base one day while on leave many years back, he was surprised to encounter Billy and to learn that he had joined the CG.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. May God bless you with many happy memories.

To the entire Benton family. I am saddened to read in this mornings paper of Billy's death. I was completely supprised. I had seen him at Alex's every now and then but not recently. I remember the good old days on the island when we young and did not know or care what he future held for us. I will hold you in my prayers and may the lord GOD comfort you during these difficult times. Please excuse me if I do not make the visitation or Funeral; I have my own health problems.
