MORTON - Wilfred L. "Willie" McCarthy, 95, of Morton passed away at 9:17 a.m. Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at Apostolic Christian Restmor in Morton.
He was born April 9, 1915, at the family home in rural Harmon, Ill., the eighth of 10 children born to Joseph and Anna (O'Brien) McCarthy. He married Helen Lawonn on Oct. 5, 1936, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Pekin.
Surviving are his wife, Helen McCarthy of Morton; two children, Judy (John) Schertz of Morton and Laren (Alice) McCarthy of Lincoln; five grandchildren, Jay (Karen) Schertz, Jill (David) Tobias, Kay (Paul) Ebelherr, Kelly (Jon) LaMoth and Bobbi McCarthy; eight great-grandchildren, Ashley and Megan Schertz, Leah, Katie and Drew Tobias, Preston and Payton Ebelherr and Devyn McCarthy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and three sisters.
Willie graduated from Pekin Community High School in 1933 and began his career at J.C. Penney Co. in Pekin, rising to assistant manager. In 1940, he became a tool grinder at Caterpillar Inc., retiring in 1977 after 37 years of service.
He attended Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Morton.
He was a former member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 916 in Pekin. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local 974 and Caterpillar Retirees Club, both in East Peoria, and the Kennel Lake Sportsmans Club in Morton.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 2, 2010, at Ludwig Mortuary in Morton, with Father Mark DeSutter officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the mortuary. Burial will be in Hirstein Cemetery in Morton.
