Wendle Hammond Obituary


HAMMOND, Wendle Wendle Gene Hammond, 65, of 138 Dana Drive, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, went to be with his Lord suddenly on August 8, 2005. Born in Greenville, SC., he was a son of the late J.C. and Mattie Craigo Hammond and the husband of Beatrice Davidson Hammond. Mr. Hammond worked in textiles for many years. From textile management, he moved to industrial sales most recently serving as an outside sales representative for Industrial Distribution Group from which he retired in December 2004, remaining an independent consultant until his death. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Furman Good Guys Golf Group. He loved music, hunting, and fishing. Mr. Hammond was a faithful member of Siloam Baptist Church for 30 years where he was an active member and treasurer of the 50-up Co-ed A Bible Study Class and was director of the Senior Saints. Surviving in addition to his wife of 47 years are four daughters and sons-in-law, Drs. Kathy and Alec Chessman of Charleston, Karen and Todd Stansbury of Corvallis, OR., Kelly and Clay Evans of Birmingham, AL., Karla and Larry McDonald of Birmingham, AL.; seven grandchildren, Hannah and Zachary Chessman, Haley, Andie, and Lynley Evans, Mattie and Avery McDonald; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Juanita and Taft Anderson of Greenville, Edith Morrow of Springfield, MO., Peggy and John N. Landreth, Sr. of Westminster; and a sister-in-law, Rhoda Hammond of Jupiter, FL. He was preceded in death by a brother, J.C. Hammond, Jr. Flowers accepted or memorials may be made to Siloam Baptist Church Mission House Fund, 229 Siloam Road, Easley, SC 29642; American Heart Association, 310-B Bennett Center Drive, Greer, SC 29650; or the American Cancer Society, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, N. Charleston, SC 29406, in memorial of Wendle Hammond for Ovarian Cancer research in honor of his daughter, Karen. Visitation will be held Thursday, August 11, 2005 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, August 12, 2005 at 1:30 PM at Siloam Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Don Dunavant and Mr. D.L. Bundrick officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be his nephews and great nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be the 50-up Co-ed A Bible Study Class of Siloam Baptist Church.
