Wendell Adams Obituary


ADAMS, Wendell WALTERBORO Mr. Wendell Oliver Adams, 73, of 5080 Sniders Highway, Walterboro died Monday evening, September 4, 2006, at the Medical University Hospital of South Carolina in Charleston. Funeral services will be 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, September 8, 2006, in Bethel United Methodist Church, 355 Hampton Street, Walterboro. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Jordan Cemetery, Cottageville. Mr. Adams was born August 5, 1933, in Cottageville and was a son of the late Thomas Monroe Adams and the late Marion Addison Adams. He served his country in the United States Air Force as a First Lieutenant and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Engineering from Clemson University class of 1954 and his Law Degree from the University of South Carolina in Columbia class of 1961. He was then admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1961. Wendell Adams dedicated his career to the practice of law and to helping others and serving his community. He started his law career with J.P. Harrelson in 1961 and shortly after went into private practice until he accepted the position as County Judge for Colleton County. He remained in this capacity until sworn in as Magistrate in 1979, and served for the last sixteen years of his career as Chief Public Defender for Colleton County. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, downtown Walterboro, and was a longtime member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Walterboro Lodge No. 1988. At the Walterboro Elks Lodge he was a past Exalted Ruler, Lodge Trustee and was also a member of the South Carolina Elks Hall of Fame. He was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose Walterboro Lodge No. 1938 and was a Master Mason. Surviving are: his son, Gregory Wendell Adams and his wife Kristin Joy Adams of Charleston; a daughter, Suzanne Adams of Cottageville; a brother, Gerald Monroe Adams of Spartanburg; and two sisters, Marilyn Camburn of Walterboro and Elaine Yates of Summerville. There are five grandchildren that also survive, including Katlynn Olivia Adams and Gregory Wendell Adams, II. Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has suggested that memorials be directed in his memory to Heartland Hospice, 3 Southpark Circle, Suite 280, Charleston, South Carolina 29417.
