Walter McDowell Obituary

Walter McDowell ATLANTA, GA - Walter McDowell, fondly known as "Mr. Mac", passed away Sunday, March 25, 2012 in Atlanta, GA following a brief illness. He was 96 years young. Born in Milford, Ohio, he came to Charleston in 1940 to attend classes at the Citadel for a year before moving on to California, but he never left. He retired in 1978 from the Charleston Naval Shipyard as Chief Quarterman Electrician in Shop 51 and filled retirement with his family, fishing trips and church activities. He was a wonderful father and grandfather and Bible teacher at Yeamans Park Presbyterian Church. Preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth in 1993, he is survived by his children; John R. McDowell, Sr., Mary McDowell Oglesby and her husband, John Oglesby, Jr.; grandchildren, Elizabeth & John R. McDowell (Jr.), Jeffrey, Lauren, Katy & Kevin Oglesby; and two great-granddaughters, Nadia and Maleah. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, March 31, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., at Yeamans Park Presbyterian Church, Hanahan, SC. Visitation begins at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Yeamans Park Presbyterian Church, 5931 N. Murray Drive, Hanahan, SC 29410.
