Walter Mathis Obituary

MATHIS, Walter Walter Hamilton "Ham" Mathis, 79, Isle of Palms, husband of Betty Avritt Mathis, died peacefully at home on November 21, 2008. He was born May 30, 1929, in Sommerville, Ohio, the son of Walter Vernon Mathis and Statira McFarland Mathis. The family moved to Mt. Washington, KY before he was one year of age. Mr. Mathis graduated from Mt. Washington High School, served four years in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict and graduated from the University of KY with a BS degree in Electronic Engineering. He retired from Lockheed Missiles & Space in 1988, as Senior Field Engineer. He is survived by his wife of 56 years; daughters, Lucy and husband Dennis Martin of Huger, Patricia "Pat" and husband David Freeman of Mt. Pleasant, Pamela "Pam" and husband Michael "Mike" Martin of Bonneau, Wendy Mathis of Isle of Palms, Cherri and husband John Fontana of Campbell, CA, Julie and husband Larry Hale of Virginia Beach, VA; a son, Jeffrey "Jeff" C. Mathis of Isle of Palms; 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, November 29, 2008 from 2 PM to 5 PM at the home of Pat and David Freeman. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the organization of your choice. The Mathis family is being served by PALMETTO CREMATION SOCIETY, Charleston, SC.
