Dr. Walter Gregg Jr. CHARLESTON - Dr. Walter Boyd Gregg Jr., of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 12, 2024, at age 68. Born on July 25, 1955, "Walt" grew up in Charleston. Walt graduated from Clemson University in 1977 and married his wife, Paula, on August 13, 1977, before graduating from the University of Georgia as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1979. Walt opened Gregg Animal Hospital in 1984, and faithfully and expertly served his patients and clients of Columbia, SC, for nearly 40 years. He was an expert surgeon and diagnostician, and was honored as the South Carolina AVMA veterinarian of the year in 2011. Walt was an avid outdoorsman and loved bird hunting and fishing with his friends and family. He was beloved by many for his quick wit, good humor, gregarious personality, and abiding faith. He was a central figure in his children's and grandchildren's lives, was a profound teacher, loved a hammock nap, and could often be found trying to fix anything he could tinker with in his shop. Above all, Walt loved his family fiercely and they him. His love for Paula was evident to everyone in their community and remained the foundation of their 46-year marriage. His greatest joy was spending time with her, their children, and their growing families. He was the beloved patriarch of the Gregg family and will be dearly missed. Walt is survived by his wife, Paula Gregg; their three sons, and their families Boyd and Paige Gregg of Charleston and their children, Walt, Emmie, and Henry; Will and Alicia Gregg of Charleston and their daughter, Edie; Stephen and Lauren Gregg of Greenville, North Carolina, and their son, Lucas. Walt is preceded in death by his parents, Boyd and Edith Gregg. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 17, from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at the Daniel Island Recreation Center, 160 Fairbanks Dr., Daniel Island Trail, Charleston 29492. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 18, at Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul, 126 Coming St., Charleston 29401. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Point Hope Presbyterian Church, 1951 Clements Ferry Rd., Suite 200, Daniel Island, SC 29492. Sending wishes of hope and healing as your family takes comfort in the memories of Walt´s life. Walt and I were fraternity brothers at Clemson but the barriers of time and distance left us out of touch. I am so very glad he had a wonderful veterinary practice. That was always his goal.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I considered Walt a good friend....he was also my Veterinarian through three dogs...helping me with one very difficult one.
We were also in Focused Living mens Bible study for many years....actually meeting at his office for a period of time. Always enjoyed talking w Walt. My wife, Dana and I extend our heartfelt prayers and sympathy to you and the boys.
