Vivan Holmes Obituary

Vivan Holmes (nee Singleton) NAPERVILLE, IL - Vivian Holmes (nee Singleton), age 95, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2015, at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, IL. She was born on June 25, 1919, in Charleston, SC, to the late James and Theodosia (nee Stevens) Singleton. She grew up in Charleston and Summerville, South Carolina. She graduated Alston High School and upon completion of business college at Avery Normal Institute, went to work at her cousins' real estate company, Rodolph Real Estate Agency. In 1950, she came to Chicago. In 1953, she married Albert Holmes, who was also from Charleston. She thoroughly enjoyed her trips back to Charleston and had a collection of Ethelyn Parker and Post and Courier newspaper clippings sent to her to keep her current, when not in Charleston. She also enjoyed sewing and cruising the resale shops. In 2001, while on vacation in Charleston taking care of business matters, Albert passed away. They had been married 48 years. He was laid to rest with his parents and siblings in Charleston. She came to Naperville, IL shortly after. She leaves to miss her dearly; one son, Kenneth (Rosina) Holmes, two daughters, Retta Holmes-Williams, Ida (Ronald) McNeal, four granddaughters, Tanya (Michael) Pettis, LaQuita McNeal, LaKeysha (Alfred) Murray, LaShawna (Kyle) Netsingha, one grandson, Christopher (Samantha) Holmes-Williams, two great-grandsons, Dorrion and Jerry McNeal, five great-granddaughters, Alexis Wood, Jada and Serenity Grace Holmes-Williams, Savi Netsingha, Ariel Murray, two sister-in-laws, Wilhelmena (Reverend Isiah) Anderson, Edna Barbee, brother-in-law, James (Betty) Washington, and numerous nieces, nephews,and cousins. Preceding her in death were three brothers, Allen Singleton, William Fuller, and Edward Singleton. She will be laid to rest next to her husband, Albert, at Emanuel Cemetery in Charleston, SouthCarolina. Visitation will be Thursday, May 7, 5:00 until 8:00 PM at the Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville. Interment will be private.
