Virginia McCourry Obituary

Virginia Maye McCourry JOHNS ISLAND - Virginia Maye McCourry was welcomed into heaven on Wednesday, April 11th, 2012. She was born to John and Ida Winger of Minneapolis, Minnesota on September 19, 1924 and was the eldest of three children. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Nursing degree in 1946. She then traveled with a friend to California because "she had had enough of the snow". There she started a very long career in nursing. She was a warm and loving nurse, loved by patients and co-workers. She met her husband, Ray C. McCourry, in California on a blind date. They were married December 3, 1950 and celebrated 59 years together. She worked in many different hospitals as she accompanied her military husband to both the East and West coasts and overseas to England and Germany. She loved the small rural hospitals best, such as Summerville Hospital, Summerville, SC and Yancey County Hospital, Burnsville, NC as she often knew the patients. When she was "on shift", you knew you would receive excellent and compassionate care. She loved to travel to visit friends and family and made many trips across the United States. Family reunions in Minnesota, North Carolina and Montana were fondly remembered, as well as the many reunions from her Nursing Class (Spring of 1943) from University of Minnesota. She was a wonderful Mom to her three children, Susan, Peggy and Judy. She taught them all they needed to know about cooking, focusing on desserts, especially the ones involving chocolate. She dearly loved her chocolate. She was an accomplished seamstress, loved to crochet and cross-stitch, sharing her knowledge and items with those she knew. She also loved to play card games. Over the years, she was part of many canasta clubs, making many new friends along the way. SkipBo was a family favorite, especially with her grandchildren. She was very good at playing but was always a gracious winner. She leaves behind her beloved family, Susan (Tom) Traher, Peggy (Dean) VanDeLeest along with grandchildren Amanda, Matthew, Ryan VanDeLeest, Judy (Dean) Kinard with grandchildren, Sarah Kinard Kastner (great grandchildren Caroline and William), Abby Kinard Remington (great grandchild Tyson), and Nathan Kinard. She also cherished her many nieces, nephews, brothers/sisters-in-laws. Visitation will be at the Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home in Burnsville, NC on Friday, April 20th, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00. Funeral services will be held at the Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, April 21st at 11:00 am. Following will be the burial located at the Peterson-McCourry family cemetery on Pound Mill Road. Family condolences may be sent to 1063 Brownswood Road, Johns Island, SC 29455. MOM, WE LOVE YOU and miss you but we know we will see you again some day. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

I think the Canasta group would have dissolved after BJ's death but Virginia took charge and called us and she played until this month. She was a good player and a wonderful kind and generous human being.

I knew Virginia through the local canasta group. She was a very gracious lady who always had a smile. We had moved here from Minnesota and Virginia was interested in where we had lived in the Twin Cities. I will miss her at the canasta games.

I feel like Auntie Ginna and I were soul mates. She was with me when my mother (her sister) was dying and we held on to each other in our grief. It created a special bond. We talked on the phone regularly after that for more than 30 years sharing thoughts and feelings. She was a very special lady and I wish I could be there to celebrate her life well lived. I am so glad she got to come to Montana and we got to go to North Carolina. My most sincere condolences go out to the rest of the family. She will be missed.
