Chief Petty Officer Virgil Lee Williams, US Navy, (Ret.) JAMES ISLAND - Entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of Thursday, June 24, 2010, Chief Petty Officer Virgil Lee Williams, US Navy, (Ret.), husband of Matilda Shokes Nielson Williams. Residence, James Island, SC. The relatives and friends of Chief Petty Officer and Mrs. Virgil Lee Williams are invited to attend the memorial service of the former in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, Saturday, June 26, 2010, at four o'clock. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Chief Petty Officer Williams was born October 21, 1927, in Sargent, Nebraska and raised in Riverton, WY, the son of George Arthur Williams and Anna Mary Wolfe Williams. He served nine years in the U.S. Army and retired after twenty-one years in the U.S.Navy. He served during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a member of Church of The Good Shepherd. He is survived by his wife of James Island, SC; one brother: Alvin Williams (Louisa) of Blaine, WA; seven stepchildren: Anthony Paul Nielson, III (Dee) Manahawkin, NJ, Henry Thomas Nielson (Robin) of Mena, AK, Robert Ashley Nielson of North Charleston, SC, Susan Nielson Brady (Jacky) of North Charleston, SC, Janet Nielson Jilote of Charleston, SC, Dr. Philip Edward Nielson (Kelly) of Knoxville, TN; Nancy Nielson McCaughey (Rick), of Peachtree City, GA; his sister-in-law: Louise Williams; several nieces and nephews, twenty grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, with two on the way and two great-great-grandchildren. And lastly, Annie, his dog. He is predeceased by two brothers, Francis and Donald Williams, one sister, LeEtta Williams Wilder, and a grandson, Thomas Anthony Meyer. Memorials may be made to Church of The Good Shepherd, 1393 Miles Drive, Charleston, SC 29407 or Hospice of Charleston Foundation, 676 Wando Park Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
