Her funeral service will be held Monday, November 14, 2022, in Folly Beach Baptist Church at 1:00 pm, and the family will receive friends beginning one hour prior. Burial will follow at Old St. Andrews Parish Churchyard. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel. Verna was born November 7, 1929 in Green Sea, South Carolina, daughter of the late Ira B. Huggins and Mamie McQueen Huggins. She was a graduate of Cumberland College and Winthrop College. Verna was a teacher in Charleston County schools for more than 30 years. She was a member of the first faculty at Stiles Point Elementary School where she taught first grade for 23 years. Verna was a member of DKG Sorority, receiving the Order of the Rose for being a 50 year member. She also served as DKG chapter president, as well as several state committees. Verna loved serving in her church in many capacities. She shared the love of Jesus with children as the Sunday School Director and the Bible School Director for decades. She sang in the choir, served on many other committees, and even church secretary. Her passion and lifelong gift of music led her to become a church musician at an early age and served as organist until age 92. She is survived by her son, Preston Monroe Blanton III (Pam) of Moncks Corner, SC; daughter, Beverly Blanton Parsons (George) of Georgetown, SC; grandchildren, Elizabeth Blanton Hughes (Bryan), Michael Blanton, Hannah Parsons, and Rebekah Parsons (and fiance; Cody Floyd); great-grandchild, Amelia Hughes; many nieces and nephews; and sisters, Lottie Ann Jones (Howard) of Bessemer City, NC and Betty Grainger (Junior) of Tabor City, NC. In addition to her parents, Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Preston Monroe Blanton, Jr.; brothers, Howard Huggins, Claude Huggins, Clayton Huggins, and Bright Huggins; and sisters, Mildred Harrelson, Hazel Hinson, Flora McGougan, and Voncile Huggins. Mrs. Blanton was my first grade teacher in 1968 @ Stiles Point. I have so many wonderful memories of that year! I wanted so badly to get an S+ in handwriting. I remember her telling me that my name was long and that I had to practice over and over. Eventually, I got the S+ I had wanted so much. She directed the first play I was ever in. I was cast as Peter Rabbit´s mother and although I was so sad to be "mother rabbit", Mrs. Blanton consoled me telling me that I was tall and she knew I could memorize all my lines. I also recall that I had my tonsils removed that year. Mrs. Blanton had my classmates write me get well cards and she came to visit after school. I felt so special that MY teacher would come and visit at my house!

My grandparents lived on Folly Beach and often I would spend the night with them. If I stayed over on a Saturday, I went to church with my Nana and Papa on Sunday. When I saw "my teacher", Mrs. Blanton, at church I was so excited that my teacher was a real human and she didn´t live at school!

Every story read aloud or every personal conversation she gave her undivided attention that made every child feel validated and seen. Years later I realized that she loved Jesus and she was such a wonderful role model of a Christian educator for me!

In 9th grade Mr. Blanton taught me physical science. Unfortunately, I was not a very good science student but Mr Blanton and Mrs. Blanton were great encouragers. I am so sorry our world has lost a true Godly woman who lived life fully and everything she said or did ALWAYS pointed to God!

She certainly inspired me to work hard and practice over and over if I truly wanted to succeed academically, socially and emotionally! She was a woman of great faith and expected the very best of her students and herself.

I´m so grateful that she shaped my future and my 32 years of being a public school educator was successful because of the teachers God placed on my educational journey! I am grateful that we kept in touch the last few years via Facebook. We shared a deep love of music and both of us were accompanist for our church!

I will be praying for her family and I know her longtime friends and church family will greatly miss her dearly! Tonight I am praising God for Verna Blanton and for the positive impact that Mrs. Blanton had on me.
I´m sure when she entered heaven Jesus met her and welcomed her to her Eternal home and that she heard Jesus say, "Well done my good and faithful servant!"

May our Lord give you His comfort as you adjust to life without her and even though, the grief brings sadness and tears, in time i pray that thoughts of her will bring you peace and even joy and laughter! Welcome home, Mrs. Blanton! You are such a wonderful example of a life well lived!

Verna was such a beautiful lady. Loving and kind. So glad I got to spend time with her at The Blake these last few months. May God comfort her family during this difficult time.
