Urbanna Gay Obituary

Urbanna Vaughan Gay HAMPTON - Mrs. Urbanna Vaughan Gay, 92, of Altman Road near Hampton died Tuesday morning, March 23, 2010, in the Hampton Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Born April 2, 1917, in Hampton County, she was the daughter of the late Alec Peeples Vaughan and Agnes Loper Vaughan. She had worked at Vincent's Drug Store in Hampton for over 50 years and was the longest active member of Sandy Run Baptist Church. Ms. Urbanna was an avid historian and photographer, donating numerous photos to the Hampton Historical Society. She also loved gardening and had donated a unique rose to the SC Botanical Gardens. An expert at handcrafts, especially crocheting, she had completed numerous afghans and crosses that she donated to everyone she met. Married to the late John W. Gay of Beaufort, she is survived by one brother, Alec P. Vaughan, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Virlie V. Holmes, Myrtle Tuten and Wilhelmina Mobley and one brother, Ralph Vaughan. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 26, 2010, at 3 PM in Sandy Run Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Sandy Run Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday evening from 6 until 8 PM at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, 300 Mulberry Street West, Hampton, SC 29924 (803-943-3352). The casket will be placed in the church at 2 PM Friday prior to the service.
