Timothy Gray Obituary

Dr. Timothy Kenney Gray Mt. Pleasant - Dr. Timothy Kenney, "Ken", Gray, 82, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Patricia Anne Rutter Gray, entered into eternal rest Friday, April 1, 2022. His Celebration of Life will be held at 2PM on May 1, 2022 at Dunes West Country Club. Dr. Gray was born October 4, 1939 in Baltimore, Maryland, son of the late Francis Joseph Gray and Eleanor Kenney Gray. He graduated, with high honors, from both Loyola University-Maryland and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He was an endocrinologist and professor of internal medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill for more than 20 years. During that time, Dr. Gray became known as a pioneering researcher in the study of Vitamin D metabolism and osteoporosis. He viewed his career as a medical researcher and physician as a way to serve others and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve. In the early 1990s, he moved to Mount Pleasant, SC, and started Carolina Endocrine Associates, a medical practice located in North Charleston. He and his wife, Patricia, "Pat", who is a registered nurse practitioner, led with heart, devotion and cared for their patients together for over 30 years. Dr. Gray volunteered for the Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic on Johns Island. He was a member of the College of Charleston Cougar Club and the Preservation Society of Charleston. He was a curious, loving and Kind soul who was an avid reader and a member of The Charleston Book Club. He enjoyed traveling the world, hiking, biking, kayaking and saying yes to any activities he could enjoy with his family and dear friends. He'd recently started dancing lessons with Pat and was a budding pool shark. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Patricia "Pat" Anne Gray of Mount Pleasant, SC; son, Timothy K. Gray (Mary Ellen Carter) of Bedford, MA; five daughters, Kathleen Gray (Peter Higgins) of Chapel Hill, NC, Maura Simpson (Vic) of Charlotte, NC, Cole Baker-Bagwell (Andrew Bagwell) of Raleigh NC, Gia Jones of Durham, NC, and Brooke Allen of Knoxville, TN; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild and a brother, John A. Gray (Gerri) of Matthews, NC. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Frances Driesch. In lieu of flowers and in honor of Dr. Gray's commitment to education, Pat is establishing a scholarship fund in his name for students in need at The College of Charleston. Memorial donations can be made to The College of Charleston Athletics Fund (Tax ID #57-0640443). Checks can be mailed to 66 George Street, Charleston, SC 29424. Please include "Dr. Ken Gray memorial" in the memo line. Donations via credit card can be made by calling the Athletic Fund at 843-953-7504. I was so sorry to find Dr Gray's obituary. I was a patient and a big fan of he and Pat and their honest approach to medicine. Pat was always there to go to bat for me with insurance and Dr Gray was frank and thorough, a great couple. My deepest condolences, Pat, to you and your family.

Dr. Gray was such a very special person in my life. He was like a brother to me for a long time ... but as time moved on - kind of lost contact with him. But when I needed advice - he was always there for me. Was so happy when he met his wife - she always kept him on his toes and hopefully she is doing okay now. Will never forget this giant of a man who was a great physician and one who knew how to enjoy his life and to encourage me to move on to bigger and better things and I did. Rest in Peace - I will never forget you.

Dear Pat, I was a patient in 1997. I had a lesion on my Parathyroid that had been operated on 10 years before W/O finding it. He got it located and had it removed and treated me for osteoporosis. I never felt more confidence in anybody than I did you all. Thanks for everything. Josh Garvin Jr., DMD
