Thompson Parker Barnwell CHARLESTON - Thompson Parker Barnwell, 29, died in Charleston on Monday, March 21, 2011. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at the Second Presbyterian Church, 342 Meeting Street, on Saturday, April 2, at 2:00 p.m. Following the service the family will receive friends at 17 John Street. He was a graduate of Bishop England High School and majored in sociology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Thompson was a serious, sensitive and personable young man. His sensitive nature was revealed in many ways, notably in his painting. The sport of his choice was soccer, and he played ardently throughout his high school and college years. He was a meticulous workman both in Greensboro and in Charleston. He is survived by his parents: Nathaniel Elliott Barnwell and Nancy Thompson Barnwell of Charleston; a brother John Russell Barnwell and his wife Sarah of Washington, D.C.; a grandmother Mrs. Nathaniel L. Barnwell, a grandfather Russell E. Thompson, and three treasured uncles: Donald W. Thompson, John P. Barnwell and Frank L.P. Barnwell, all of Charleston. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Nathaniel Longstreet Barnwell, his maternal grandmother Laurie West Thompson, and his uncle Middleton Stuart Barnwell. I still remember living in Winston-Salem and you would come over and hang out. You always had a smile or kind word for us and never showed the cynicism or negativity that plagues so much of the world today. Though I knew you for a short time I never questioned your decency or good heart. I pray that you find peace as you journey into the next life. Godspeed Thompson.

Its so hard to believe Thompson is gone. Ive read the articles and his obituary countless times, hoping it will sink in. Everything about his death breaks my heart. I can remember the first time I saw Thompson, what a doll baby! We became friends and it was always a pleasure to be around him. The void his departure has left is massive. I hope he is at peace and I hope the memories of his smile and what an amazing guy he was will bring some comfort to everyone that loved him. To his parents, words can never describe how sorry I am that you lost him. You must be great parents because he was truly a class act. He was down to earth, respectful and an all around gentleman. You are thought about and prayed for daily. Take care of each other and thank you for Thompsons beautiful life.

April 1, 2011

My heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies go out to the Barnwell family. From Charleston to Greensboro, so many people have felt the loss of someone so special.

Thompson was a vivacious cohort, artist, and friend. He looked past judgement and appreciated people for who they were. He was an intellect and avid supporter of ridiculous theories. His smile would easily brighten a room and the light in his eyes was inspirational to those around him. I will never forget those late nights in Greensboro when we would chat about our professors, classes, or idealistic theories. He would look past the face value of any object and take it to an abstract level until he found something meaningful and concrete. Thompson was goofy and lovable, and had a unique sense of humor. He could pull anyone out of a funk and not even have to try very hard.

My heart is heavy and saddened by his departure from this earth. I hope that in passing, Thompson has reached the peace he deserves. And his family is able to rest knowing that he is loved and will be so greatly missed by us all.

My deepest condolences go out to the Barnwell family. Your loss is felt greatly by those who knew Thompson. He was a genuine personality that stuck with the Greensboro community for long after he left it.

I had the privilege of getting to know him through the art/music community and pick eachothers' brains a bit on life, art, and some of the things that connect the two. I always respected the honesty, intelligence, confidence, and humility in his character.

Nancy and Elliott, I never got to meet you, but I extend the utmost respect and deepest condolences to you and your family. Thompson will be greatly missed. I'm personally heartbroken to hear of the loss of this good friend and a great man.

Thompson, be with your loved ones and give them strength during these hard times. You live on in the thoughts of those that you impacted forever man. Rest in peace brother.

Thompson was such a fantastic person. We endured many days of classes together, as well as many late night hangouts. I will miss his personality and his friendly wave everytime he saw me. I truly feel for his family and friends as everyone copes with this. We will all miss him. I feel like this won't do him justice. However, xoxo Thompson, this is what I can do for you. You will forever be prevalent in my mind.

Although I don't know the Barnwell family, I want you to know my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. I'm burning a candle in Thompson's honor, and the flame has been going for about 48 hours, nonstop. I am deeply saddened by his loss, and I know all who knew him are feeling the same way. Rest in peace, Thompson. I'll always remember your laugh and the pleasure of sharing so many good times with you.

Dear Elliott and Nancy:

My heart goes out to you both; it seems so un-natural that a parent should bury his or her child; it appears that the order of succession has been reversed in Thompson making his transition.

As the mother of a son born to today's younger generation, it appears to be such a tragedy to lose the energy and creativeness he expressed, according to everything that I have read. I knew him when he was young, and though I might not have recognized him as an adult, because he was your son, I paraphrase an African saying: "When my friends cry, I cry, too."

It is truly the destiny of all humankind when the bonds of life is freed from the vehicle for the Soul expression called our body. In Qohelet 1:2, it is written: "Vanity, vanities of all vanity, everything is vanity." The transcription of that passage is: "It is absurd to think that we can live outside of the Will of God. Everything is vapor, breath, Spirit."

Because we have been created in God's image-likeness, according to the Allegories of Genesis 1:26, since God is Spirit, we are Spirit, and just as God could never cease to be, neither could we (your son). Therefore, bid him a "Good-night/Morning"; through entering the portal of what is called "death," he has entered into the realm of eternal Life.

As long as you turn your face toward the SON, you will never face shadows.

I offer you both, along with your other family members, my prayers as consolation.

Dear Nancy and Elliott,
We are truly, deeply sorry for your tragic loss.
