Thomas Weeks Obituary

Thomas W. Weeks Edisto BeAch, SC - On Thursday, July 29, 2021, the Honorable Thomas W. Weeks passed away in the hospital in the loving arms of his immediate family. Thomas was a most generous and loving husband, father, uncle, brother, and friend and is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Drew W. Weeks; his daughter, Shannon W. Taylor (Charles) of Johns Island, SC; his son, T. Warren Weeks, Jr. (LeeAnne) of Greenville, SC; and beloved grandchildren, Emily L. Weeks, Anna V. Weeks, Kelsie A. Taylor, and Colby A. Taylor; siblings H. Odell "Spooky" Weeks, Jr. (Fran) and Jane W. Anderson (Scott), and many great-nieces and nephews. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, the Honorable Mayor H. Odell Weeks, Sr. and Ella Byers Weeks of Aiken, SC. Thomas was born in Aiken, SC and graduated from Aiken High School in 1960. In May 1964, he graduated with honors from Clemson College - now Clemson University - with a B.S. Degree in Industrial Management. In December 1974, Thomas obtained his J.D. degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law with the following accomplishments: Phi Delta Phi; Member, Order of Wig and Robe; and South Carolina Law Review, 1973-74. He was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1975, as well as the U.S. District Court of South Carolina and the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Thomas practiced law in Aiken briefly before moving to Barnwell, SC in 1976 to practice law with Blatt & Fales, later known as Ness, Motley, Loadholt, Richardson & Poole before becoming Motley Rice of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Upon first meeting Thomas, the Honorable Sol Blatt, Sr. gave him the name "Tom." Tom was a partner with the firm from 1978 until he retired in 2005. In 1981, Tom was appointed to the State College Board of Trustees which governed the College of Charleston, Lander College, and Francis Marion College. In 1988 when three separate boards were created, Tom remained with the College of Charleston Board of Trustees, where he served a total of 21 years until July 2002. Appointed by former SC Governor Jim Hodges, Tom had served on the Atlantic Compact Commission since its formation in 2000. Tom formerly served on the Board of Visitors at Clemson University and the Board of Directors of Hitchcock Rehabilitation Center of Aiken, SC. On August 25, 1994, Tom became the associate municipal judge for the Town of Edisto Beach before becoming the municipal judge on November 8, 2001. He retired from the bench in April 2020. Tom was a member of the Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island and the Edisto Island Lions Club. Tom was a confidant, advisor, and mentor to so many. Tom was a lover of many things, but especially his family, his network of friends, the Clemson Tigers, riding his Harley, driving his moped around Edisto, boating, fishing, and Drew's famous cooking. The Celebration of Life will be Saturday, August 7, 2021, beginning at the First Baptist Church, 161 Allen St., Barnwell, SC 29812, with the visitation starting at 12:00pm and the Memorial Service following at 2:00pm. Thereafter, a graveside service open to all family and friends will commence at 4:00pm at Bethany Cemetery located off Hampton Ave. NE, Aiken, SC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tom and Drew Weeks Scholarship Endowment (Fund #B4428), Clemson University, Office of Development, 110 Daniel Dr., Clemson, SC 29631 or to the Edisto Island Food Pantry, 2164 Hwy 174, Edisto Island, SC 29438.
