Thomas Read Obituary

Dear Ann, AP, Helen, Tom, Bill, Emerson and your wonderful extended families:
After losing my Father at age 10, Uncle Bill became like a father to me. Similarly, having no siblings, Ann and Tom became essentially a sister and brother to this younger cousin. The love and support from the Doshers and then the Reads have meant so much to Joy, me and our four children over the years. The 2 Navy submarine tours in Charleston were so much easier, for when we deployed I knew Ann and Tom were nearby. Also Tom was a mentor to us in the real estate field and a real brother with advice on our house purchase on James Island. You all made us feel so much at home at your home in Lawton Bluff and your cottage at Wrightsville Beach over the years. Finally the whole family was an inspiration and role model for our younger family as we followed along. Further Joy and I will never forget the fun times together, and the skiing trip to Park City with Emerson and Mari and the great advice they gave us re the finer points of skiing.
Thus we as a family share your loss as a closely knit part of your family. Tom was an inspirational leader in the family, business, church and community as evidenced by the many who attended the service. All who knew him will miss him greatly as we were all blessed to have known and loved him in life. We were thankful that six of us in our 2 generations could be with you during this celebration of Tom's life. By example Tom left his mark on us all.

Ron and I are so sorry for your loss. We could not work it out to stay a few more days but we are glad we got to see Anne and AP. As I have known all your family since I was young I always had a great respect and admiration for Thomas. You all have been in our thoughts and prayers. We will continue to pray for your family.

I was so shocked and saddened to hear about Mr. Reads passing. My thoughts and prayers are with the whole Read family. I only worked at Read and Read for a short time and he was always a kind and gentle man. He will be missed dearly by his friends and family. Sincerely, Mella Osterkamp Schofield

I was sad when I heard of the untimely death of Tom Read. I had every intention of attending the funeral, but a previous appointment prevented that. I first knew Tom when he delivered out newspaper in Riverland Terrace when he was a teen-ager. Later I had the privilege of seeing his four children as their pediatrician. Tom and his wife Anne were always favorites of mine. I enjoyed their children growing up, and was pleased when Helen decided to become a pediatrician.
I now reside in Bishop Gadsden retirement community where Tom was so involved that a section, the Read Cloister, was named for him. I never heard anything but favorable comments about Tom. Please accept my sincere condolences. Walt Ector, MD FAAP

To all of the Read family, my thoughts and prayers are with all of you.He was a big part in a lot of peoples lifes and will be remembered dearly.

Tom, AP, Billy and family, Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you during your time of grief. May you find peace in knowing that he touched so many lives and I'm glad he did mine.

Tom Read was a good neighbor, friend and tireless advocate for everyone on James Island. He was also, what seems rare in these days of corporate greed, a buisnessman motivated by what was in the best interests of his employees and clients. Charleston has lost a giant.

Mrs. Read, AP, Helen, Tom and Billy - I was so sorry to hear about Mr. Read. He was a gentle man, with a great whistle that could be heard anywhere in the neighborhood! I will be forever grateful to him for the wonderful photos he took a number of years ago of "the Creek" from the backyard of 695 North Shore (as a surprise to me from my husband). May God's healing grace be with you in this sad time.
