Tommy and Pati,
I can only imagine how you must miss Mr. Tom already. I am still getting my mind around the fact that he has left “this world”, but I am comforted somewhat by the thought that God did not allow him to remain here in a limited, uncomfortable, or dependent state, because he was independent and deserved much better than that. Mr. Tom was one of the kindest human beings I've known in my life, bar-none. WHAT was not to love about him? Just the sound of his voice would put you at ease. He was soft-spoken, warm, welcoming, and encouraging. He could talk to anyone about anything. Very intelligent; never arrogant. He was “class”. I've always told my parents that if more people had his disposition, the world would be a much kinder place. He made people feel like he was interested in their life, and what was going on in it. I've honestly never heard him say one bad thing about anyone; however, if he had something positive or good to say, he did not hold back. Tommy, Mr. Tom and Ms. Jo An loved you without boundaries. You couldn't hold a conversation w/ either of them, without “Tommy's” name in the mix; after you married it was “Tommy and Pati”. He was gentle, he had a million dollar smile that would make you smile to see it. He was not a complainer, even during his illness.
His personality and Ms. Jo An's seemed polar opposite on the outside, but I believe the truth is they were PERFECT for each other. She was his excitement and motivation and he was her steady, solid, easy-going balance. Inseparable. I'm glad he and I got to talk long-distance a few times recently, but I was looking fwd to my Summer-visit with him in a couple weeks. If you were blessed enough to make the acquaintance of Tom Mathis, it was a privilege. You were doubly-blessed, because you were his son, Tommy.
I've been gone a long time, but I have numerous good memories of Mr. Tom (and Mrs. Jo An); and, they always make me smile. I KNOW you do. Take comfort in them.
I hope at least one of those angels has a voice like Marty Robbins – his favorite.
Sending my love and comforting prayers,

Tommy & Family, We're real saddened to hear of the passing of Tom. All that I ever knew of Tom was good. He was a quiet and humble man, well-thought of. We have many good memories of all the Mathis and Smith families. God Bless.

Tommy and Patti,
I know this is a hard time for you. Tommy your dad was one of the nicest people we've ever met. I'm glad Danny and I got to visit with him in May,and he gave us some of his great BBQ sauce. Teresa thought the world of Mr. Tom and Miss Jo Ann, as she always referred to them, and was looking forward to visiting him when she got home this July. She stopped by at Christmas time but he was gone for a treatment. I know you'll always have wonderful memories of both of your parents. We'll be praying for you.
