JOHNSON Sr., Thomas

Thomas R. "Jello" Johnson, Sr., 83, died Thursday, March 8, 2007 at his James Island home. Born January 15, 1924 in Charleston, SC, he was one of three children of the late Frank James and Marie (Bennett) Johnson. A graduate of Charleston High and Murray Vocational, he and his classmates have kept in touch meeting monthly for lunch. He joined the Marine Corps in January 1943 and was part of the 5th Engineer Battalion at Iwo Jima. When World War II ended he went to work at Seaboard Coastline (now known as CSX) for three years. Mr. Johnson retired as the Veterans Affairs Officer for Charleston County. He was a member of the American Legion Post 147, the VFW Post 445 and a life member of Elk Lodge 242. Mr. Johnson had hosted the annual Marine corps reunion of C Company 5th Engineer Battalion for the past eight years. He will be deeply missed by his family: son, Tommy Johnson and wife Debi, James Island, daughters: Sheryl Roberts and husband Spike, Ladson, SC, and Cindy McBride and husband Les, James Island, brother, Frank James Johnson and wife Dot, Marion, SC, sister, Marie Chambers, Summerville, seven grandchildren: Jamie Bolton, Robbie Johnson, Laura Deaton, Luke McBride, and Alex McBride, all of James Island, Carrie Springmeyer, GA, and Christie Altman and husband Brian, Summerville, SC. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, March 10, 2007 at Holy Cross Cemetery, James Island. Memorials may be made to the Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society Charleston, 1004 Jefferson Ave., Bldg. 717, Goose Creek, SC 29445. I have known Jello all of my life through his friendship with my uncle Gilly & Raymond Simonin. He was always a fun person to be around and so helpful to me when my husband died and he helped me obtain VA benefits. My prayers are with Tommy and Debbie & family as well as Dean. Sincerely, Joye Wall
