Thomas Creech Obituary

Thomas Marion Creech GREENVILLE, SC - Thomas Marion Creech died suddenly on June 29, 2023 at Greenville Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born in Seneca, South Carolina on December 4, 1937, he was a son of Marion Acuff Creech, Jr. and Ruth Green Creech. His family moved to Greenville, South Carolina in 1939 where he remained a lifetime resident. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane Yarborough Creech; four children, Jane Creech Arnaud (Michel), Jean Creech Avent (Jon Regan Walters, Jr.), Thomas Marion Creech Jr. (Andrea Wyrosdick), Nena Creech Stone; and eight grandchildren, Thomas Webb Avent, III, Thomas Marion Creech, lll, Jane Andrea Creech, Holly Daniel Stone, Celeste Harley Creech, James Cooper Stone, Jon Regan Walters lll, William Valentin Arnaud. He is also survived by his two brothers of Greenville, James Edward Creech (Margaret) and John Green Creech (Dulcie) and sisters-in-law, Jean Yarborough Helms, Mary Elizabeth Yarborough, Millie Yarborough, and Rosemary Upshaw Creech; as well as over twenty nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, and family friend, Christine Foster. Tom was a pillar of the community. He served as Chairman of the South Carolina Arts Commission at the request of former governor, the Honorable Richard W. Riley. He was also appointed to the Greenville Civil Service Commission. He was the third generation and lifelong member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church. He was Executive Vice President and member of the Board of Directors at The First Savings Bank, formally known as First Federal Savings and Loan of South Carolina, as well as being the Corporate Secretary and Assistant Chief Operating Officer. He joined the bank in August 1958, starting part-time in the mailroom while working his way through college. He went on to dedicate 35 years of service to the bank, which was the largest financial institution headquartered in the state of South Carolina at the time of its sale. He graduated from Greenville High School in the class of 1956. At Furman University, where he graduated in 1960, he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon's Phi Alpha chapter. He attended Indiana University Institute for Banking for graduate studies. A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 6, 2023, from 12:30 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at Buncombe Street Methodist Church with the service to follow at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Entombment will be held in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to The Riley Institute at Furman University, the Boy Scout's Blue Ridge Council Camp Old Indian, and Leisure Ministries at Buncombe Street Methodist Church.
