Thomas Churchill Obituary

Thomas G. Churchill, III JOHNS ISLAND - Thomas G. Churchill, III, passed away in Charleston, SC, after a 12 1/2 year battle with cancer. Tom was predeceased by his parents Thomas, Jr., and Celeste (McAleer). He was born December 7, 1944 in Los Angeles, and shortly thereafter, along with his mother, moved to be with family in Cohasset, MA, in 1944. Tom attended Cohasset public schools excelling in sports and was the quarterback for the Cohasset High football team. Some may remember Tom as one of the youths in the infamous front-page pictorial of four young men who shaved their heads. This incident precipitated Tom's relocation to California where he graduated from Newport Beach High School, Newport Beach, CA. Tom then entered the Navy where he served in Japan and was Far Eastern Golf champion. Tom's zest for life led him into various vocations. He was a lobsterman, captained a swordfish boat off the coast of South America and a golf professional. For the last 20 years, Tom was employed early on by the Kiawah Island Golf Resort and then furthered his career at the Kiawah Island Club on Kiawah Island, South Carolina. Tom also worked for the same company at their golf facility in Doonbeg in County Clare, Ireland. Tom is survived by his brother Richard and his wife Christine of Quincy, MA, and his sister Jo Ann Maitland and her husband Frank of Stuart, Florida; also, his nephews Robert and Richard Churchill of Quincy, his nieces Sara Churchill of Quincy and Stephanie Golinveaux of Richmond, CA. Tom's nephew, Richard (Bucky) Hubbell, predeceased him. Tom will be remembered for his engaging personality and sly smile. Above all, he will be truly missed by those he touched throughout his life. He will forever be "above" everyone at the Kiawah Island Club, the Cassique Golf Course and Clubhouse, and all the people he loved and who loved him. Swing away, Churchie. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Tom's name may be made to: South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation, PO Box 286, Irmo, SC 29063 At Tom's request, services will be held on Kiawah Island. Interment will be private. A Celebration will be held in Tom's honor November 24th at 4:00 p.m. at the Cassique kayak dock, with a reception to follow at the Cassique Clubhouse. Tom and I were swordfishermen together from the Grand Banks of Newfoundland to the Gulf of Mexico. We were golf partners, Red Lion Inn partners, and partners in a few other "adventures". He had a big heart and a love of life. Many of us still use phrases, saying them the way Tom said them in his own unique way. He will be missed.
