Theodore Mitchum Obituary

Theodore Paul Mitchum CHARLESTON - Theodore Paul Mitchum, 96, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Jennie Elizabeth Murray Mitchum, entered into eternal rest Friday, February 2, 2024. His Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, February 6, 2024, in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Road, at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Gardens, 7113 Rivers Ave. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 11:30 am. Paul was born September 4, 1927, in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Jack Mitchum and the late Annie Elizabeth Shirah Brunson. His childhood and youth were spent on the east side of the Charleston peninsula, where he met the love of his life, Liz Murray, at the neighborhood ice cream parlor. They dated, were married and remained together for 67 years until her death in 2012. Paul previously worked for the US Postal Service before employment at the Charleston Naval Shipyard where he retired as the Supervisor of the Industrial Relations Office. He enjoyed golfing with the "Rascals" at the Charleston Municipal Golf Course, as well as traveling and cruising with Liz, family and friends. He was a self-made handyman and was always ready and willing to assist others with home repairs and projects. He was a Past Master of Masonic Lodge Union Kilwinning Lodge No. 4 in 1971. Paul served his country in and was honorably discharged by the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Paul is survived by two daughters, Jean Mitchum Grooms (Marvin) and Paula Mitchum Strobel (Jim, deceased); and one son, Edward Paul Mitchum (Julie); and predeceased by his son, Theodore Julius "Ted" Mitchum (Elizabeth); also surviving are eleven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces; nephews; and one special cousin, Irene Poore. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Liz; parents; sister, Elizabeth Mitchum; and brother, John Mitchum. PaPa, as he was known by those closest to him, cared for and loved his family dearly. He will be sadly missed not only by his family, but by anyone who came to know him. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a church or charity of one's choice.
