Thelma Kaanta Obituary

LEOMINSTER -- Thelma E. (Jalko) Kaanta, 79, of 95 Carriageway Drive, died Sunday, Jan. 2.

She was born on July 11, 1925, in Fitchburg, the daughter of Peter and Aili (Koskinen) Jalko. She graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1943.

Mrs. Kaanta retired in 1984 from Fitchburg State College, having previously worked at the former Iandoli Supermarket and the former Eino A. Tofferi Insurance Agency in Fitchburg.

She was a member of the Finnish American Club of Saima in Fitchburg.

Mrs. Kaanta leaves her husband, Voitto K. Kaanta of Leominster; a daughter, Jean Hutton of Martinsburg, WV; six grandchildren, Steven, Melissa, Kelly and Jason Kaanta of Fitchburg, Kenneth and Kevin Hutton of Martinsburg, WV; and eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey R. Kaanta, who died in 1991 and a brother, Tenho E. Jalko, who died in 1994.

KAANTA -- On Jan. 2, Thelma E. (Jalko) Kaanta, 79, of Leominster. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m. in Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Fitchburg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.
