Terry was born July 31, 1953 at Baptist Hospital in Columbia, S.C. the third child born to James S. Arazie and Victoria Setton Arazie, owners of Margo's on Main Street. She spent her youth in Columbia and graduated from USC in 1975 with degrees in Psychology and Special Education. She married H. Edward Scharstein, Esq. in 1975 and they moved to Charleston. From 1978 to 1986 she was the owner and purveyor of fine linens at her store in the market area, The Hope Chest. She later taught advanced language arts and social studies to 5th grade gifted students. Her last teaching position was at Givhans Alternative program, working with at risk students. Her students were her inspiration and she had a profound effect on them. The family wishes to express a final thanks to all who pitched in and helped the family deal with the many challenges of this journey (extended family, neighbors and friends) by running errands, driving to doctor appointments and offering their support. She was preceded in death by her husband H. Edward Scharstein. She is survived by her children Melinda Mead Scharstein and Harry Victor Scharstein both of Charleston; a brother Stan Arazie and a sister Rachelle Arazie, both of Columbia, S.C. Mrs. Scharstein was my 4th and 5th grade teacher (93-94/ 94-95). I remember receiving a hand written post card from her before the start of my 4th grade year at Newington Elm. She loved our class and we loved her so much, she moved up with us and became our 5th grade teacher. I am not sure what made me search for her but I did. To find that she is resting peacefully, brings me both joy and sadness. She was an awesome teacher. She taught me things that I still use in life, at age 38. I now live in Florida and have had so many teacher since. No teacher stood out and made such a difference as she did. Mrs. Scharstein, I love you.

I just found out today. I wish I could have told her how much she meant to me as a student. She is and was my all time favorite teacher. I had her in both the sixth and eighth grades. She always frank, funny and too the point. Challenging me to think outside the box, she was the only teacher I ever had that seemed to truly understand her students and now how to push them further. She had a profound effect on my life, as I know she did on so many of her students. I only regret I wasn't able to tell her myself. Mrs. S I hope to see you in heaven, if I can live a life as good as yours I know I'll make it.

Sincerely,
EJP

Mrs. Scharstein taught me throughout middle school as well as my sister. She was one of my absolute favorite teachers and I will always remember her for the love she showed us each and everyday inside the classroom and out. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. I hope you can take comfort in knowing what an impact your mother made on so many lives in the short time we were blessed with her presence. You will be deeply missed Mrs. Scharstein.

Terry was a rock star - always smiling, always brightening the day of those around her, always thinking, always loving. I did not know Terry for a long time but my time spent with her was wonderful. My daughter had the chance to meet Terry the week before she passed and she was captivated (as were the rest of us) with how funny and wise Ms. Terry was. As a fellow ovarian cancer patient I take strength in knowing Terry is at peace and with Ed. Her legacy lives on in Melinda and Harry - how proud Terry was of them.

I can hear God rejoicoing as He welcomes His beautiful daughter home. I will miss you Terry. God Bless you.

Terry Scharstein was a teacher of mine from 6-8th grade. She was a great eduactor, wife to her late husband and mother of her 2 children. I considered her more than a teacher to me but as family. She will be missed but we should be joyous that she is now in a place away from pain. God Bless her and her family.

Terry taught both our children (Meg and Jake) and through her brilliant teaching and amazing personal attention to all her students, we became fast friends, a friendship I will always cherish. She was braver than anyone I've ever met, generous to the end, and always, always on point with her wonderful sense of humor. We'll all miss you, woman!
