Taby Keener Obituary

Taby (Lydia) Keener CHARLESTON - Taby Keener, daughter of the late Ruth Ferguson Reeves and the late Percy Gooding Reeves, entered into eternal rest on the morning of February 21, 2025, in Charleston, SC, with her daughter and grandson at her side. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her memorial service at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at Grace Episcopal Church, 98 Wentworth Street, in Charleston, SC. Taby was born in Allendale, SC on August 1, 1927, and was one of eight children. She graduated from Allendale High School and worked with Railway Express Agency for many years. She and her late husband, Paul Pinckney Keener, were co-owners of Transmission Doctors. She was a Super Senior Member of the Country Club of Charleston (CCC), where the flag is flying at half-mast in her honor. The CCC was her home away from home for 47 years, where she spent a majority of her time playing Bridge and dining with dear friends. She loved golf and was a member of the Ladies Nine Hole Golf Association at the CCC. In 1995, Taby won the Nine Hole Handicap Tournament and her name is engraved on the trophy at CCC. She also had a passion for football all of her life, and was a huge Gamecocks, New Orleans Saints, and Kansas City Chiefs fan. She is survived by her daughter, Paula Keener of Charleston, SC; her grandson, whom she adored, Elliott Parker Chavis of Arlington, VA; her sister, Julia Phillips of Jacksonville, FL; and many nieces, nephews, and more friends than anyone could imagine. Her gift was her Southern grace and charm that surrounded her with many loving friends, both young and old, throughout her long life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Grace Church Cathedral or the MUSC Health - Specialty and Emergency Women's Department. Arrangements by James A. McAlister Funerals & Cremation, 1620 Savannah Highway, Charleston. (843) 766-1365.

Paula,
I just saw that your mom passed away. I ride by her house every few weeks and always look for her in the yard or going to the mailbox. We talked several times over the last year. Last time I saw her was at Publix and she was carrying her small bag of groceries. She said "I´d only 96, I get along just fine. We talked about your dad and how he would only allow me to drive the old black 1955 Ford truck the he loved.
I loved how she would say my name and sounded like it was a mile long.
Very special lady and I know you will miss her dearly. Just letting you know if you need anything please reach out to me.

Taby was such a fun loving and dear person. We have such fond memories of spending time with Taby for many years at the Heritage Golf Tournament. A wonderful storyteller with a tremendous sense of timing, Taby was always the star of the show. Taby’s passing will leave a void in the lives of many people, but I’m sure Taby is dancing with the angels now. Paula, may God comfort you at this difficult time.

Taby Keener was a beloved special member of The Country Club of Charleston, whom I had the pleasure of knowing for 36 years. She brought a smile to my face every time I saw her and she was perpetually cheerful and laughing. She always asked about my son we talked about her love for her grandson. She will be fondly remembered.
