Sylvia Mitchum Obituary

Sylvia Mitchum CHARLESTON - Sylvia Jean Capps Mitchum, daughter of William Earl Capps and Doris Veeda Dawsey, was born October 09, 1942, and died Oct 18th 2025, in Charleston South Carolina. She attended James Island High where she was involved in the Homemakers of America, the Glee Club and Drama Club, where she had lead role as Daisy Mae which she sang. She met her husband, Thad Mitchum, while working at Ewards 5 and Dime on King Street. Sylvia received a scholarship to Winthrop but her heart led her to marry Thad the day after she graduated and moved to Chestertown, Maryland, where Thad was stationed in the Army. They moved back to Charleston in 1962 where they have remained ever since. Sylvia was a faithful and active member in Saint Matthew's Lutheran Church, where she served on Church Council and Campus Ministry. Sylvia chaired many fund raisers for those members in need. She also was a Troop Brownie Leader at Martin Lutheran Church on James Island. Sylvia baked many goodies for her children's elementary classmates and held get togethers at her home for all their friends. Sylvia was supporter of Fort Johnson Band, which her daughter and son was participated in the band; she and Thad worked the concession stands serving hot chocolate to help raise money. Sylvia started her employment with Southern Bell in 1964 and retired from AT&T in 1991. While at Southern Bell, Sylvia organized Board for Women for the Civitan's; she worked at the first olympics held in Charleston and was in involved in the development of The Junior Pioneers for AT &T and was still a member of the Pioneers group. After retirement, she focus on her children, family, friends and church. Later she did have an antique business called THIS & THAT in Mount Pleasant and at South Windemere. Sylvia loved all eras of antiques and enjoyed travelling with one of her besties (Kay Squires) across the states searching for treasures. She enjoyed the peacefulness of gardening and actually at the family Lake house was awarded Wild Birds Habitat for her gardens due to all the different birds that visited and lived there. Her other hobbies were renovating/remodeling/decorating of homes, plus travelling the world with her husband, Thad. If you ask anyone that knew Sylvia they would speak to her infectious smile, her love of her family and friends but most of all, she was always there to lead a ear, shoulder, a hand, a hug to all. She was loved by many! Sylvia is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Thaddeus (Thad) Mitchum; her daughter, Renee' Mitchum-Foulis (Steven), Her grandchildren, Alex Hamilton (Tammy) and Hailey Mitchum. Great-Grandchild, Tyler Guy (Brooke); Her brother, William (Bill) Capps (Kate). She loved dearly her entire family filled with aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Thaddeus (Tab) Mitchum II. Her family would like to thank the medical teams at MUSC for all the hard work, friends and family that visited and supported them but most of all, GOD for giving us the extra time with her. Yesterday

I'm very sorry to hear of Mrs. Mitchum's passing. It was a pleasure serving her and Mr. Mitchum for 13 years when issues arose at their Ashley House property. She was very appreciative and always had kind words for me during our many conversations. She could count on me to open the heavy doors for her when arriving back at the Ashley House and getting fast service on her apartment work orders. She was a wonderful lady. God bless Mrs. Mitchum.

Thad and Family, so sorry to hear of Sylvia's passing. Thoughts and Prayers to You All. Sylvia was One Of A Kind. Always liked seeing her at the Heritage Golf Tournament years ago. Always a Smile for Everyone.
