Suzanne Duckworth Obituary

Suzanne Duckworth CHARLESTON - Suzanne H. Duckworth, beloved mother, grandmother "Da", aunt, sister, friend, mentor to many, and matriarch of our family, passed into her next life on May 8, 2024. Sue was born in Baltimore, Maryland on June 6, 1930, the daughter of Maurice Darnell and Augusta Insley Simmons Horn. Sue is survived by her daughter, Kim Duckworth, her son, Robert Duckworth and his wife, Robin, her daughter-in-law, Bonnie Duckworth, her grandchildren, Charlotte Duckworth, Clint Duckworth and his wife, Crystal, and Sam Duckworth and his partner, Colleen Koster, her great-grandson, Chase Duckworth, and many extended family members who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her sons, Chris Duckworth and Michael Duckworth and her brothers, Maurice D. (Toby) Horn, Jr., and George Kimble Horn, III. Sue was married to Donald Duckworth for 32 years, and as a corporate wife, moved her family twelve times to ten different states, embracing new communities, making new friends, and establishing relationships with Episcopal churches along the way. At Grace Episcopal Church in Charleston, Sue wore many hats, serving as Junior and Senior Warden, a Stephen Ministries leader, with Cursillo, on the Diocesan Commission on Ministry, the Vestry, and Christian Education. Volunteering and community involvement were important to Sue. Some of the Boards she served on are Charleston Interfaith Crisis Ministries (now One80 Place), Lowcountry Food Bank, Carolina Youth Development, Clean City Commission, and several of the Mayor's Task Forces. Having small children close in age lead Sue to employment with preschools in NJ and PA. Returning to SC in the late 1970's, she worked as a teacher of autistic children, on the 1980 Census, on a Johns Hopkins University Grant Program at US Naval Shipyard, as a licensed Life Accident & Health agent, as a VP of Capital South (Executive Suites and Human Resources), at MUSC Radiology Dept., the Institute of Psychiatry, the College of Medicine's Parallel Curriculum Program, and finally in the offices of Grace Episcopal Church. Sue was a resident of Bishop Gadsden for 20 years and was involved in numerous committees and activities. She's been fondly called the "Mayor of Myers Hall" and loved her BG family and staff and was loved by them. Sue's family expresses their appreciation to the staff and caregivers at Bishop Gadsden, MUSC, and Agape Lowcountry Hospice House. Sue's funeral service will be held at Grace Church Cathedral, 98 Wentworth Street, Charleston, SC, on Monday, May 20, 2024, at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Sue's honor to One80 Place, the Bishop Gadsden Residents Assistance Fund, or the charity of your choice.

Words cannot adequately describe how much I loved and admired Sue. She was a life force that changed many lives for the better ... including mine. Godspeed, good friend. How lucky we are to have shared this earthly journey with you.

Sue has been a lifelong friend of my mother, my aunt and my cousin and her family, the Pavesich family. When my mother died, Sue sent me a lovely note that helped me with my grief. The world will be poorer with her passing. She was a thoughtful, kind woman. My condolences to her family, all those she loved and those who loved her. You are in my prayers.

I remember Ms. Duckworth well when we were helping with the chaplaincy and I knew Ms. Robin from Mr. Hanvey.
