Susanne Taylor Obituary

TAYLOR, Susanne Susanne Lowndes Taylor, 89, of Mt. Pleasant died Monday, September 10, 2007 at a local hospital. Born June 6, 1918 in Savannah, Georgia she was the daughter of Susan Lee Gaillard Lowndes and William Lowndes. Educated at Pape School in Savannah, she attended Ashley Hall in Charleston and was a graduate of Smith College, Northampton, MA. She also attended the College of Charleston. She was a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, Charleston. As a young lady she was employed as a stenographer at the Coast Guard base in Charleston. Her musical talent led her to serve as the assistant organist at St. Philip's Episcopal Church where she was a choir member and also a Church Mouse. She served as the organist at both St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Christ Episcopal Church, Mt. Pleasant and also as the junior choir director and a member of the choir at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Mt. Pleasant. Mrs. Taylor spearheaded the restoration of the Henry Erben Tracker organ at the Huguenot Church, Charleston. She was a member of the Charleston Music Study Club, the American Guild of Organists, the Charleston Artist's Guild, and former member of the Junior League of Charleston, and the Sandwich Club. An accomplished watercolorist, Mrs. Taylor exhibited her work at the Seagull Gallery in Mt. Pleasant and at St. Philip's Church. She was an avid small boat sailor. Her husband, Francis Bergh Taylor, preceded her in death in 1983. She will be deeply missed by her four children: Susan T. Hemminger, Charleston, Arthur M. Taylor (Sarah), Beaufort, Charlotte L. Smith (David), Charlottesville, VA, and Francis B. Taylor, Mt. Pleasant; eight grandchildren: Susanne L. Taylor, Charleston; Arthur M. Taylor, Jr., Beaufort; Caroline L. Smith, San Francisco, CA; Anna B. Smith, Chevy Chase, MD; David L. Smith, Norfolk, VA; Stephen G. Smith, Charlottesville, VA; Francis B. Taylor, Jr., Mt. Pleasant; C. Lowndes Taylor, Mt. Pleasant. Graveside services will be held at 4:00 PM Thursday, September 13, 2007 at Christ Church Cemetery, Highway 17 North, Mt. Pleasant. The family will receive guests at the residence after the service. Arrangements by McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, 150 Wentworth St., Charleston.
