Susan Romaine Obituary

Susan Romaine DELRAY BEACH, FL - Susan Romaine, of Delray Beach, FL, died on March 15, 2023 following a short yet courageous battle with cancer. Susan is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Romaine Crawford (husband, Benjamin Crawford) and her grandchildren, Madeleine and Isabelle; her step-children Hilary and Henry Romaine; her step-granddaughter, Casey Romaine; her sisters, Mary Lintermann (husband, Chris Lintermann) and Judy Moulton; and her brother, Andrew Donaldson (wife, Judy Donaldson). She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Henry Romaine, and her parents, William and Josephine Donaldson. Susan was a talented and well-known artist. Following a successful career in finance, she began her professional artistic career in 2000 and enjoyed considerable success with her work in numerous private and corporate collections. She has been a member of Oil Painters of America since 2001 and was invited to be Artist in Residence by the Gibbes Museum of Art for the year 2003/2004. "Cornices of Charleston", a book of her paintings and the photography of Jack Alterman was published in 2005. Her work has been represented by galleries in Delray Beach, Charleston, and Santa Fe. Along with her artistic accomplishments, she was a valuable member of both the Delray Beach and Charleston communities. During her time in Charleston, Susan served as board president for the Center for Women, where she spearheaded the development of the Micro Loan program for small women-owned businesses, as well as the board president of the Crisis Ministries Homeless Shelter (180 Place). After her move to Delray Beach in 2014, Susan became an art instructor at the Milagro Center, as well as owner and co-owner of the Walker Romaine and MAE galleries. She was passionate about preserving the strong artistic community of Delray Beach and Artists Alley, as well as an activist in local politics and a member of the Rotary Club. The family would like to thank Judi Murphy, Susan's devoted friends, as well as her nurses and health care providers for their tireless efforts in caring for Susan during her last months. Friends and family will be celebrating her life on Saturday, March 25th from 4-7pm at her home in Delray Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Old School Square (OldSchoolSquare.org) and/or the Gibbes Museum of Art (gibbesmuseum.org). Visit our guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/charleston

Shocked to hear the news today. She was a great friend who had the best sense of humor and laugh of anybody I have ever known.

Susan was always a great supporter of women in the arts.
She encouraged me to branch out and start a new chapter with Walker Romaine Gallery.
Working together in Artist Alley and Pineapple Grove was an exciting time.
Laughing, singing, drinking & dancing together are joyful memories I have of Susan.
An extraordinary painter, beautiful intelligent woman, and delightfully good soul.

The brightest of souls. The warmest of hearts. Brilliant, strong and kind. As a friend, she was always there for a good laugh and a shoulder to cry on. As an artist, her vision and talent was incredible. She captured light like Vermeer and the essence of her subject as if she had created them. My dear friend, I will miss your smile and laugh for the rest of my days. I feel so fortunate to have known you. Safe travels to new adventures.

oh dear Kathryn, my heart breaks for you and your children. Your mom was taken way too young. What an extraordinary, lovely woman. May her memory be a blessing now and for always. With love and deep sympathy, Rochelle Rutledge, Sullivans Island.

I remember when Susan first started painting in the mid 90s. She started painting and right away there was talent I can still remember how excited she was. She was such a loving mom to Kathryn and simply adored her and was devoted to Henry. She always laughed and had positive and wonderful ways to encourage others. Both Susan, Henry and even Kathryn came to our wedding back in 96, and even came to our baby shower years later taking time out of their busy lives to invest into ours with their love. I will never forget our days on Sullivan“s Island and the impact it made in my life at the time. Susan you will be missed, but your legacy and love will carry on in Kathryn, and your grandchildren and your work. Blessings to all of you.
